Hello all.
Today is the first day I'm attempting a serious effort at losing weight and being healthy.
I'm a type 1 diabetic and have been since 1996. I haven't been to a doctor for it in years until just recently. I've started to see some changes in myself that I am sure are diabetes related since I have not been taking good care of myself. I've done some research and have looked into several different diets, and the one I decided to go with and try out is the low carb high fat diet...so we will see how this goes! I'm up for anyone's suggestions advice.

I also eat low carb high fat, and my diary's open to friends, so add me if you'd like. Please also see a doctor ASAP. My father is a type 2 diabetic, and has suffered unthinkable consequences from not keeping it under control.0 -
Please see your doctor right away, before you lose even a pound. DM1 is not something you can play around with. If there is anyone on this planet who loves you, do it for them. Then after that, welcome to MFP. It is a wonderful site that can help you immensely. Good Luck.0

Thanks Athena, I will add you! I need all the ideas I can get.
And I do have an appointment scheduled for a diabetes specialist in a couple weeks, so on the right track there.0 -
Just to add my 2 cents - coconut oil is a great fat, helps you lose weight and has a very high smoking point, which is good for cooking.0

Glad to see you have an appointment made! I myself hadn't looked after my diabetes for a few years (type 2) I have since decided that I am worth looking after and the only one going to do that is myself. Yes I have a great hubby and kids and there are here to support me and I thanks them for it. I find I am much more accountable here having to put everything in my diary and open for friends to see. I have found the friends here supportive and we all want to succeed. If you need another friend add me!0

I've had a lot of success with low-carb, high(ish) fat diet. I've cut out a lot of wheat, breads, grains, sugars, pastas etc. Doing the wholefoods approach and little processed food. It's great! I'll send you a friend request.0

Some good advice to see your dr first as to what they can decide on how and what they are going to use treatment. Also ask to see a dietian if it is covered by your insurance. They can help you get started with your health, eating habits and exercise program. I also have a grandfather, great Uncle and father who are Type 1 diabetic and I myself am a hypoglycemic. I hope you get on the right track not just for your health but for your life and wellbeing. Good luck to you, you are taking the first step into the right direction. If you want to add me feel free, I can be a good motivator!!0

I'm a type 2 and was diagnosed late 2009. Aside from my maintenance meds, I have been eating moderate carb diet coupled up with weight lifting to help me prevent blood sugar from rising coz when we lift weights, we burn stored glucose found in our muscles. I agree with the others, please see a doctor first to assess your condition and also recommend you a RD who will customize your eating plan. Self-medicating it can do you and your body more harm than good.0

I don't have diabetes but my doctor just put me on the DASH diet which was first introduced for high blood pressure, but has been found to help with other things such as diabetes so you may want to check out just Google it and I'm sure it will come up. Good Luck in your journey...0

MFP is a great place to start..there are tons of people who are here to help and support you on your journey. But like the others have said, please go see a doctor in regards to the type 1 diabetes. I wish you all the luck hun. Add me if you like :flowerforyou:0

I know where your coming from. Type 2 here was on glipizide but after losing weight and excercising the dr. took off the meds. I can not stress enough to hang in there, your going to feel so much better afterwards. One thing i strongly recommend to other diabetics is Diebatic Living Mag, you can check it out on the net. Great recipes and lots of good articles. I have used several of their recipes already. Do not want to sound like a commercial but it can really help. Good luck.0

I am an RN who has worked with non-compliant diabetics for over 25 years.
I am glad to see you have an appointment.
I would hate for you to have any complications: kidney failure, blindness, amputations being the worst.
I don't mean to seem impertinent, but I've seen it too many times to pretend it won't happen.
Good luck and welcome to mfp0 -
I'm type 2 diabetic and I've been doing the DASH Diet Weight Loss Solution by Marla Keller and my A1c has dropped from 6.1 to 5.5 since January. It's been rated as the best diet for diabetics. The first 2 weeks are low carb, lots of veggies, lean protein, and then you gradually add in fruit, grains and dairy. I've never felt better!0

Hello all.
Today is the first day I'm attempting a serious effort at losing weight and being healthy.

You've made a great choice on LCHF (low-carb/high-fat) which (regardless of people's ideas on the dash diet - no offense to them) is by far the superior diet for managing Type I or Type II diabetes.
Myself, I went from HbA1c of 12.2% at diagnosis to maintaining between 5.1 and 5.4% for the past 18 months now. I'm a severe Type II with very-little insulin production, which is why I chose the ketogenic diet. I've followed it over 2 years.
Ron Raab (former VP of the Intl. Diabetes Federation, and Type I diabetic) has a great write up here; http://www.dsolve.com/sucess-stories/150-ronraab
Dr. Richard K. Bernstein, also a Type I gives great detail and studies in his book, "Diabetes Solution". These are just a couple sources I used before making my decision regarding diet.
I can also link you to literally dozens of studies showing a LCHF ketogenic diet is superior for so many reasons, including currently used markers of cardiovascular health.
You've made a great choice, please feel free to friend me.0
