Hi, I really need help on losing weight. I'm 19, 5'7 and I weigh 260. It's so depressing because no matter how much I try, I can't lose weight. And then I just stop caring. I've been wasting all my well earned money on fast food everyday and it's gotten to the point when I can't stop. I don't know what to do. I wanna lose about 120 pounds in order to feel healthy and happy but I don't know what's holding me back. I always tell myself the night before that I'll start over and I won't mess up but I do and then I just end up over eating. I probably eat way more calories then I should. I try to exercise but because i'm so out of shape, I get discouraged. I feel really alone in all this. I just need support and tips on how to start and keep the weight off. What can I do and how do I stop over eating? I know my over eating has something to do with my depression because since I was diagnosed, I gained 100+ pounds. I know it's not healthy and it could lead to many different health scares but I can't seem to stop. I wanted to lose at least 30 pounds before June. Is that possible? I just need some kind of advice, encouragement and someone to understand. Thank you.

Do you track now? If not I'd suggest starting to. Once you see exactly what you're doing and have it down in front of you start making small changes?0

I am plagued by various brain cooties. The only thing that helps me get started is being busy. Can you be out and away from fast food for a few days? Thank of various things you could do around town. Cutting cold turkey is the only think that works for addictions, IMO. You also have to find new coping mechanisms. It's very hard; I'm not going deny that. I've replaced binging and purging with exercise. Not to the point of addiction but to a point where I enjoy it and the runner's high keeps my spirits up.0

You are here on MFP and you recognize you have roadblocks, we all do. I agree with logging your food and sharing your diary. It helped me to hold myself accountable by setting small weekly goals and not failing with the walking, it wall all I could do to start out with, now I am working out with a trainer in a gym. I have been here for 4 months and am in much better shape. My first goal was to take this seriously and log in every day and share everything I ate and calories burned. Consider this a new lifestyle and pledge to eat one healthy meal every day - no matter what. Then continue to set small goals. It is a mindset. Research Niacin for helping with depression and maybe give it a try. I found it very helpful at 200 mg after a few weeks and threw my meds away last August. Much healthier now I don't recommend that for anyone, it was a personal decision and it worked for me. You have friends here, so hang in there and don't be afraid to be a little tough on yourself :flowerforyou:0

Start small. You don't have to make a lot of changes all at once.
Log your food and pay attention to what you're eating so you can get an idea of how many calories you're consuming every day. For me, just knowing what a serving size was and how many calories were in that serving size was a huge wake-up call, and it was enough for me to change my habits. If you're stuck on fast food and don't want to give it up cold turkey, try making healthier, lower calorie fast food choices. Every little bit helps.
You don't have to be a clean eater to lose weight, but if you're over-eating, making healthier choices will help (over-eating on steamed broccoli and broiled fish is not going to be the same in calories as over-eating on a hamburger and french fries). Start out your exercising by taking walks and build on it by increasing your distance or pace, or find some workout DVD's you think you could do in the privacy of your own home (Jillian Michaels has some free workouts, like the 30 Day Shred, on YouTube). I hate gyms, so DVD's really made the difference for me as far as exercise goes.
Finally, weigh yourself regularly and take measurements. When I tried to lose weight in the past, I didn't do either of these things, and I gave up very quickly because I couldn't see the progress I was making. This time, seeing the inches come off and the numbers on the scale come down really motivated me to keep going.
Plug your goals and information into MFP, let it do the math for you, and eat back your exercise calories.
Good luck, and feel free to add me!0 -
You will need to be patient with yourself because we all have good days and bad days. Don't give up or quit, and don't start over. Start and keep going. Forgive your bad days, and make each new day count.:flowerforyou:
1. Let MPF set your goals. They have a good approach that works.
2. Never give up.:noway:
3. Log every bite. Even when you eat garbage, and even when you go over.:blushing:
4. Never give up.:noway:
5. Move more. Try to find active things that are fun. Dance, ride a horse, swim, ride a bike, walk... (You can earn more calories by exercising, so if you just have to have a donut, exercise away 300 calories or so).
6. Never give up.:noway:
7. Drink more water.:drinker:
8. Find MFP pals to encourage you.:flowerforyou:
9. NEVER GIVE UP!!:noway: :noway: :noway:
Why? Because you're worth it.
Good luck.:flowerforyou:0 -
I'm also trying to lose over 100. I've lost 40 so far but it took 7 months. I'm still trying to figure out what works for me. I want to lose more in a shorter amount of time. I hope to lose 50 more by September.0

Reading this truly broke my heart, and I really want to see you succeed in your goals as much as you do.
Your goal of losing 30 lbs by June is honestly very possible. Don't give up, change one habit a day. For example, if you eat fast food twice a day, cut it to one, then eventually to 6 times a week, then 5 and so forth. Substitute each fast food meal for a meal you prepared at home (being calorie conscience of course). In no time you'll be eating well under your calorie goal. You may go over, and THAT'S OKAY. Don't beat yourself up, it happens to the best of us. Just remember, one step at a time. One day you may go over 400 cals, tell yourself the next day you'll cut out that soda and replace it with water. One small change a day can make a HUGE impact in a week.
Promise me, this will work. You will work at it, and you WILL achieve it.
The exercise portion I have to say was my problem as well. I didn't start exercising til the beginning of this year. If you can, I would get a gym membership along with a personal trainer. It may be an intimidating scene but the people there are there for the same goal. There are others who are stronger, faster, better in everything you do, but that is ALWAYS going to be the case with everyone. We're all there to exercise and honestly, someone who is overweight trying to lose weight or bettering them self is such an inspiration that I'd rather see that then anything else. If you don't want to get a gym membership, walking everyday even for 10 minutes at a brisk pace will help you. Then tomorrow do 11 minutes, and so forth. Like eating, small changes everyday will get you places.
Don't pile a whole bunch of goals for yourself all in one day because you will be overwhelmed and you will want to quit.
I'm going to add you and I hope you accept. I would love to see you succeed, because I know you can ^_^
Good luck and continue to log your food, even if you're over, everyday. I have faith in you and the rest of the MFP community does too.

If you are restricting your intake too much, you might be driving yourself to binge. Consider starting a little smaller with more manageable targets. This isn't a race. It cannot be done quickly. ^^ This! You haven't put the weight on in a month, you won't lose it all in a week. Slow and steady does the trick, don't restrict yourself too much, so you can still have "comfort" treats without feeling like you're failing or giving up before you tried. Don't stress about exercising, you have to make changes that are sustainable to you ... I have lost all my weight simply by controlling my portions and walking my dog! It is possible, and if I can do it, you can do it!!! Keep your chin up!!0 -

Thank you so much. I do know that tracking my foods will help me figure out what I need to eat to stay under my calorie goal and see what works for me. Thank you for all of the positivity. I'm sure with people like you and the support I am getting, I can get there. Thank you! You're wonderful.0 -

Wow thank you so much for all of your kind and encouraging words. And the advice, wow. It's nice to know people here truly do care and understand what I'm going through. I added you back and hopefully we can continue to talk. You truly have made my day and I will take all of your advice. The whole cutting down slowly thing really will help me. I will slowly get sick of fast food and realize I don't need it so much. These past few days I haven't been eating too much. I had a small frosty at Wendy's today instead of a large and I did well for my other meals so at least it's not like I overate at another fast food place. And as for the trainer, if only I had the money i would of a long time ago! Cause I would love that extra push it'd be really motivating cause when I work out at home, I give up easily. But I try to find decent exercises on youtube and hopefully that could do just as much. Or walking. This is embarrassing but just by walking a mile I get so tired and my back starts to kill but when I wasn't as over weight, I could go 2 miles and be fine. Hopefully I start seeing changes and I will set one goal at a time. Thank you again.0 -
Thank you everybody for your kind words and being so supportive. I know I can achieve my goals and lose this weight I have been wanting to do for years.0

I am more than 100lbs overweight and I know it, but yet I kept eating and not working out. I signed up for a gym membership but only went for a month. The thing that got me moving is that my brother in law signed me up for a 5k. FEAR got me moving. I realized I had to do this 5k and I am so out of shape. I started a couch to 5 k program and it sucks. But when I move on to a new week, I am amazed that the jog time I did the week previously is the easy one. I also started tracking my food on MFP. I made little changes as well. When I need to go up or down a couple of flights at work I take stairs. I about died the other day trying to go up 5 flights, but I can now jog up 1 flight. I drink water or unsweetened tea instead of diet soda. I am much more aware of what is going in and knowing I will need to do something to make up for it. Just start. Baby steps are better than no steps at all.0

It takes 3500 calories BURNED to lose 1lb. for example:
if you ate 2800 cal a day x7days = 19600 calories consumed a week
if you burned 3200 cal a day x 7days = 22,400 calories burned a week
22,400 -19600=2,800 net burned for the week it's not quite a lb lost but it's .8 lost
How do you know what you burn a day? look up BMR and enter your body data. I know all the pills and stuff the world promotes sound great, none of them work, they only increase the amounts of calories burned a day by small amounts and supress your appetite, but if you don't know your basic calorie intake or your basic burn a day, nothing can help you manage the outcome. I explain this to say that I have lost 45lbs in 6 months and I work out roughly twice a week, but walk 3 miles 3 days a week in the summer............hope this helps...............0 -
I was 253lbs, 5ft 7 and I lost 25lbs in ONE MONTH!!! Just by tracking, then I started exercising....not I am down 40lbs. It's a hard thing to do but you can wake up in the morning and make the decision. You can do it!0

You've gotten a lot of great advice here. I definitely agree with it all, especially taking small steps. (Kudos on the small frosty instead of a large. You've got it! That's how this thing is done.) There is one thing I'd like to add. Do you see a therapist for your depression? If so, talk with him/her about your emotional eating. He/she can help you to figure out what's behind your overeating. If you can figure out what's making you comfort eat and what your personal warning signs are, you can then see it coming and start learning ways to change it. If you're not seeing a therapist, maybe you could start keeping a food journal that not only includes what you eat but what you were feeling at the time. (You can do this in your MFP food diary, down in the food notes section.) Once you see the patterns that lead you to over indulge, you have a better idea of how to go about dealing with your feelings in a healthy way instead of by eating. One last piece of advice that you've already been given but that I can't stress to you enough. There will be days that you mess up and overeat or eat majorly unhealthily. DON'T BEAT YOURSELF UP!!! Log it, admit that you had a slip, then start right back in. Feelings of guilt will make you want to give up, will make you want to say "f* it. I can't do this. Its no use." Don't listen to that voice. If we can do this, you can too. Best of luck to you, Hon.0

Your not alone! You have come to the right place for support. THE FIRST thing you need to do is stop feeling guilty and beating yourself up.As you can see I have a lot of weight to lose. It is overwhelming I know...baby steps. I have a modo...I don't eat food I don't like...BUT I log log log. it really helps you to see where you are at and makes you aware of adjustments that you need to make. As far as excercise...just start by walking..slow pace if you need too..its all good. Feel free to add me as a friend...good to have a support system.0

The MFP community is extremely supportive. Just remember that you're not alone on this journey. The hardest part is starting, and once you've done that then you've won half the battle. Terrific job on making the large frosty into a small one! It may seem like a little change now, but just imagine, if you can continue to make these changes every day or maybe even every other day, you're going to get to where you're at in no time. I understand that a trainer can be costly, and that's okay that you can't get one. There's so many things you can do outside of the gym, the greatest and best thing you can do right now to start out is simply walking. Don't be embarrassed about not being able to walk a mile, I felt the same way before. Like I said, little by little and soon you'll be able to run a marathon! Once again, great job on switching to a small sized frosty. That already shows that you have control and motivation inside yourself
Log in everyday as well as your diary entries, and if you need any support I'll be here and of course the rest of the MFP community is here to help you Good luck we all believe in you.0 -
as others have said start small if you have fast food 3 times a week for instance then cut it back to 2 then the following week 1 then the week after none
i too am a fast food lover and was having some type of fast food everyday! i got out of the habbit by using my money on other things such as swimming every day so i just couldnt afford fast food
good luck !0 -

It sounds like eating for you is strongly connected to your emotions. You may want to focus your time there to get sustained results. I've had counseling for other reasons, but it's greatly improved by mental health. I only went to two sessions, but the coping strategies I was given have been essential in my recovery, and it's certainly worth the investment. There are also support groups out there, like Overeaters Anonymous, that may be able to target these emotional needs better.
Best of luck to you! When you get off track, just pick yourself up again and call it a new day. You can do this!0 -
You can do this, but it's not a race or a diet but a lifestyle change. I have 118 pounds that I want to lose and have lost 27 since Jan. 2nd. Just remember why you want to do this. As others have said, tracking is very important. Track everything you eat. I track as I eat with my Iphone. Find some exercising you like doing. You can start small, just walk, if you've been doing nothing, then any moving will help. As that becomes easy, add other things. Exercising has greatly improved my mood. And if you fall off for a day, DON'T GIVE UP! We all have our bad days, just start over the next day. If you know you want to have a day where you eat more, than move more. It will get easier and you'll want to eat well and exercise as time goes on. But I have faith that you can do this. Feel free to add me as a friend if you like, I log in everyday, and love to encourage others. Most importantly, believe in yourself that you can do this, because you can!! And this community if filled with all levels, beginners like you, those in the middle, and those that have achieved, so it makes for great support. Best of luck, I know that you can do this0

Don't try and do it all too fast. Think of this as FOR LIFE so your new eating habits have got to be manageable and enjoyable. People who try to lose weight too fast often give up. Slowly does it. I have lost 40 lbs in 10 months and I feel terrific and not at all deprived food wise. Eat lovely and delicious food, even junk food is fine in reasonable portions. Log everything. Start your exercise slowly and build up. Every little achievement is a win. You will do it. MFP is the best thing ever.
By the way I am 63 and I am in better health than I have been for 20 years. I have just taken up light weights as well as my regular cardio. I would never have believed any of this 10 months ago. Good luck! :flowerforyou:0 -

Hi thank you for the reply I don't see a therapist. I wish I had the money for it. I used to see one and we talked about weight and what I can do and all she said was that walking does help and keeping a food journal. I do believe my over eating is linked with being depressed and I know that because I started gaining weight when I was diagnosed 5 years back. It's been a tough time since then. I've gained, lost, gained it back. Like the yo yo effect. I will track my food and I won't get discouraged when I slip because I know there will be a lot of days. And that voice in my head always says "oh forget it, you'll start back up tomorrow" or "just give up, you can't lose the weight anyway" but I can! And I will. I have to be positive. Thank you again0 -
Get the support here if you do not already have that support now!! It helps!! Start logging food and exercise!! Start small!! You can totally do it!! I get the depression!! I get it too!! Hopefully the nicer weather helps too as summer is just around the corner!!0

Log in everyday as well as your diary entries, and if you need any support I'll be here and of course the rest of the MFP community is here to help you Good luck we all believe in you.
Yeah I'm pretty proud of myself because I usually get tons of cravings at night (tonight I binged when I was doing so good today!) and I really need to learn to stop those late night cravings. But I do need to limit my portions. Instead of a large, get a small or instead of 2, get one. And sooner or later, I won't even want it at all. For me, food is addicting. Like it's a drug. Like I need to eat a lot to be happy. Well it feels that way. But in reality, it's not true. I don't know the feeling of being satisfied with my meal because I always end up eating more then I should. I wanna be able to eat one plate of food and say "wow I'm actually full." instead of wanting to get seconds or binge on food later on to make up for the loss of calories that day. I just need to tell myself that I don't need to over eat to be happy. When I eat a decent amount of food on a day, I actually feel good about myself and positive and I go to bed feeling hungry..but I like that feeling. I'm not sure if that's weird. But when I tend to over eat, I go to bed feeling guilty and fat and just gross (like tonight). I need to stop beating myself up about this and actually realize I can be confident and positive, it's just going to take a lot of time and effort. Thank you again for all your words and support.0 -
Hi OP
Why don't you put the money you would spend on fast food into a jar to visually show you how much you can save? Then you could use that money for a personal trainer or a therapy session. Good on you for recognizing that you need to do something and starting on the path to your goal. I used a combination of MFP and hypnotherapy to get my on my weight loss journey.0 -
Thank you EVERYONE for your wise words and encouragement. I'm so glad I asked for advice because I wanted to for so long but I was kinda scared. Then I realized that nobody here judges you and everyone here is really helpful, friendly and supportive. Thank you everybody and good luck to all those struggling like me and congratulations to those who are actually losing weight.0
