How stressful is kickboxing on knees?

I've recently sustained injuries to both knees that won't allow me to do a lot of the workouts I normally do (i.e. squats, lunges, running, bike). I don't have access to a pool. I know I can still workout my arms, back, and core but I don't want to do that 4 days this week. I would like to get as much leg work and cardio as I can without stressing out my knees any more than I have.

So my question is, how stressful is kickboxing on the knees? I've had very little exposure to the classes.

The kicking part, especially pivoting kicks can be very stressful.
And you should definitely stay the hell away from Muay Thai.

    How about boxing instead?

To be more clear about the knee injury, it only causes pain when being forced to lift me up. This means, no going up stairs (down is fine), not bending down in a squatting motion because standing back up is painful, and no running because of the constant downward pressure being applied to my knees.

However, I can get into a squat position and hold it provided that I get back up slowly and have minimal pain.

I would absolutely LOVE to try boxing but sadly, my gym doesn't offer it. :grumble:

The knee injury is new and it feels like it's the muscles so I think the pain will be gone within the next few days. It's gotten worse since Friday (the day they started causing minor discomfort) and feels like my muscles do when I have a particularly hard workout.

It sometimes bothers my knees, but that's because I am convinced I am not kicking "correctly".
