So, I've decided that I would really love to learn burlesque. My town is relatively small and doesn't have any classes that I could take. I'm pretty flexible and can dance, so it doesn't necessarily have to be for beginners. I've done a little bit of searching and all of the DVD's that I find seem very 1980s. Anybody have any ides?? Any good DVD's that you've tried or online resources?

I mean, seriously.....how hot is this?? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMH9WyKabr0

ETA: didn't know you couldn't write that certain name of cat on MFP?

Contact the studios that are an hour away...first, they may know someone in your area that teaches or is looking to start a school...second, they may have seminars occasionaly - an hour might be too far to drive for a weekly class, but not too far to drive for a one day 4, 6, or 8 hour class...happy hunting!!!

Use your local resources to request help. Craigslist - make sure you post anonymously, you'll def attract the crazies.

Just google songs you would like to dance to and copy the routines you find.

Once you feel confident, make up your own routine.

Watch videos from the 30's and 40's golden age burlesque, pull pictures and reviews up from shows. The biggest names up here around nyc and the girls that really nail it are for the most part, self taught. You have to "get it" to do burlesque.

All you have to do to see that self teaching works in that field is watch Dita Von Teese. You really don't need classes until you are getting good at it and need refining. If you want classes though, any sort of dance class certainly isn't going to hurt. It will teach you form, balance, agility etc. all which you can tie into a burlesque style.

Burlesque really is nothing other than the art of the strip tease. Not stripping, strip tease.

^^^ very true. Esp the part about you have to "get it" to do it. I have to agree it's a self taught dance form.

Oh, for sure!! You definitely have to have an awareness of your own body and sexuality and it definitely takes a certain level of confidence to pull off. I can manage that aspect, lol. Thanks for your help ladies! I will definitely be looking up some videos when I'm not at work!

Honey and Spice (DVD) is a really good introduction to learning basic burlesque moves. It covers both the cheeky and the grinding burlesque moves.

Although there is nothing like learning in a class with a good teacher, but you could have guessed that!
