Hey there, looking for cost effective protein powders that don't taste like, well, poop. Recommendations? I wasn't sure whether whey or isolates or soy would work for me. I am currently doing 3 days of heavy lifting with 3-4 days of cardio mixed in and yoga on my off days. I am really looking for something as a good meal replacement for breakfast. Thanks!
*edited to say that no, I have not personally tasted a camel's *kitten*.*

I've never eaten camel butt......but muscle milk tastes pretty good but doesn't have great macros.......I also like Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard......Chocolate Mint or Double Rich Chocolate - both are pretty good.0

They are on the pricey side, but all the ones I've tasted from the company "It's about time" are awesome! I think the company is based in Canada, so I order them online. Right now I have the Mocha Mint and Strawberry - they are so yummy.0

All of this(Camel *kitten*, really??)....,.....Muscle Milk Light isn't too bad. Drink it fast, LOL0 -
How do you know what camel butt and/or poop tastes like?
Anyway, I just keep it simple. I use the cheap Body Fortress protein powder from Wally World, gets the job done and it's actually pretty good.0 -
I like the chocolate biggest loser protein powder. I mix it with frozen strawberris, a banana, spinach, and soy milk. It is 366 calories and 23 grams of protein. It last me for 4-5 hours until I'm hungry again if I don't have a mid-morning snack.0

I use Syntrax Matrix. It's the only one I've ever tried. It was suggested to me by someone on these forums. I got the strawberry, and I mix it with skim milk and frozen strawberries, bananas, etc. It makes a good little smoothie. I haven't used it with anything else, though.0

Oh Yeah! protein shakes are delicious. 32 grams of protein and 3 grams of sugar in each serving.0

I like Body Fortress and also Lean EAS. I mix them with vanilla almond milk or coconut milk. I also add frozen berries and lots of other things to them.0

Optimum Nutrition has some good flavors, as already stated. As does Muscle Milk, but as noted, the protein levels aren't as high. I just started using MuscleTech Phase 8. The vanilla is excellent. 150 calories and 26 grams of protein per servering.0

I like the Beverly International UMP Ultimate Muscle Protein. You can mix it with water or milk and it tastes great ( I always mix with water). I recommend the chocolate or cookies and cream. I order on the DPS Nutrition website. www.dpsnutrition.net0

Most of the higher end brands that you have to go to specialty stores like GNC to get taste great. It's the cheapo ones you can get at any department store that are utter trash.0

My protein strawberry shortcake! YUMMY0

I like the Whey Gourmet Chocolate Peanut Butter (which tastes like a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup) but it's only available in Canada now and I'm not sure where you are. Cellucor Cor-Performance has a great new one in Cinnamon Swirl if you like cinnamon. Also ON Gold Standard is always good but I've not had that kind in awhile so I'm not sure what the best flavours are these days.0

I have no idea what the flavor of camel butt is comparable to, but I like Optimum Nutrition (as many other people said as well) and I also like Iso-X from Max Muscle (they have a website if they don't have a store near you). The chocolate fudge from Iso-X is delicious and rich in chocolately goodness and has 30 grams of protein per serving.0

Not pricey and doesn't have a taste...it takes on the taste of what you're mixing it with:
Hemp protein powder, I buy it at ZNatural foods

oh yeah...and you've licked a camel's butt? .....yucky! :sick:0 -
Optimum nutrition's gold standard whey is awesome (also contains a very clean list of ingredients compared to some others mentioned here).
I've tried double rich chocolate, mocha cappuccino, and cake batter- all were AWESOME. The vanilla ice cream wasn't so great.0 -

IMO, GNC is a total rip off. Everything that I use they have in their store for almost double what I pay everywhere else. That place is my absolute last resort if possible.0 -
Isopure! - It's my favor brand.0

Jay Robb Whey Protein (vanilla) is all natural (no hormones and no artificial sweeteners) and I think it tastes great with 1.5% dairy milk or vanilla soy milk. I got it at Vitamin Shoppe.
I also like the premixed Kirkland premier protein vanilla shakes from Costco.0 -
I like Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard in any flavor. I order it from Amazon.com, because I have Prime.0

While it doesn't have as much protein as other powders (22g/scoop @ 200 calories), my husband and I LOVE Syntha6. It has 6 different types of proteins in it (hence the name) that digest at different rates, so its good for feeling full. We switched over to it from Weight Watchers Shakes since they've got a LOT less sugar.
The main reason that we got it was because of taste. My husband would NEVER consider switching out dinner with a shake if it tasted nasty in ANY way. They mix well, even with just water and a mixer bottle and I've never had any problems with chunks, or grittiness. And the flavors are AMAZING. We've tried Peanut Butter Chocolate (like drinking a reeses peanut butter cup), Strawberry (AMAZING, good additive for smoothies), Mochachino (tastes like chocolate with a shot of coffee, didn't care for it as much) and Cookies and Cream (one of my favorites, right next to strawberry. Has little protein cookie bits in it). Price comes to about $35 for a 2lb tub @ vitamin world or Amazon. We've been having these shakes every night for the last 3 months and we haven't looked back.
AGAIN: there are protein powders that can give you more protein for the calories, but for us, if it tasted gross we wouldn't be able to keep drinking them and stay committed to it. Though, 22g for 200 cals has never been a problem for us. (note: strawberry is a bit lower in calories @ 190/ scoop). We usually dilute it in 8 to 10oz of water.
Also: I've tried the samples from GNC, and the Lean 25 shakes taste good too. You just get a bit more for your money using Syntha6, depending on where you buy it.0 -
Not really "cost effective" but Isopure Creamy Vanilla is my ABSOLUTE favorite. Tastes great plain, awesome macros, and smooth not sandy taste....its the perfect base for yummy smoothies.0

You can make your own easy....I seen this recipe on youtube and it tastes good and actually has more protein than alot of the store boughten shake mix or shakes. Take 1 cup Fat Free Cottage Cheese,1 cup Skim Milk,1 Tbsp "all natural" peanut butter cuz that has less calories thn other peanut butters. Handful of Ice Cubes,1/2 of a Sugar Free Choc Pudding Mix.Blend it in a blender. Makes about 15.2 oz and has 42.3 grams of Protein.0

When I decided to try protein powder, I happened to run across Jillian Michaels protein powder in the clearance isle at wal-mart! I thought..what the heck lol and I got it. I love it!! When I ran out, I tried to drink my smoothies without it but it just wasn't as good. I recently bought the very expensive GNC Total Lean and I don't like it at all!!! I will finish it though, because it costs too much to just toss and who knows...it might help! My suggestion is...try a few different brands and buy the smallest container you can until you find one you really like..0

Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey protein powder in the cinnamon graham cracker flavor. It's delicious.0

I think it comes down to how you make them too.
I have tried quite a few and most of them taste pretty good. I generally blend a scoop of powder with 8 ice cubes and a cup of milk, it comes out like a thickshake and I actually look forward to my protein frappe. Sometimes I like to add a little fruit or peanut butter for extra taste too, peanut butter is also a great way of upping your fats if you need more fat.
If you just put them in a glass with water or milk they can taste a little sickly I find but to each their own I guess.0 -
I get my powder from Smoothie King, they've manufactured their own. It's called Gladiator. Love the vanilla for fruit smoothies and pancakes. And the chocolate tastes like an oreo to me.0
