Inches vs Pounds? Weigh Ins = Anxiety.

Hi everyone! I just started my journey and was wondering if my approach is realistic. For some reason, weighing myself has always been triggering for me, even back when I was only 120 lbs, it was always so triggering for me. The last time I weighed myself (years ago) I weighed 150 and had a panic attack. I weigh much more now. The thought of weighing myself just gives me horrible anxiety (I suffer from panic attacks regularly, so I'm easily triggered I suppose), I was wondering if just paying attention to inches lost is an okay way to go about weight loss? Is anyone else losing weight by primarily focusing on inches and clothing sizes lost?

Sorry if this sounds really silly.

Not silly at all. If it freaks you out ... don't do it. Take good measurements and track that way.

If you are eating healthy food in the right amounts and getting some exercise everything else will fall into place!
  • I don't think it's silly at all! I think that measurements are the healthiest way to monitor, actually. As you lose fat and gain muscle you may actually start by putting a few pounds on, but getting smaller overall (because muscles weigh more than fat for the amount of space they take up). But, if you were just looking at the scale you wouldn't know you were progressing the right direction. I primarily rely upon measurements (and how my clothes fit) and only weigh occasionally. If you are that anxious about the scale, throw it away and go with measurements. :) Good luck!

It doesn't sound silly at all! I have used both to keep me going. I took all of my measurements (neck, upper arm, waist, hip, thigh, calf) when I started in mid-January (a dark day for sure!) and I have measured myself only twice since then. oh, and I weigh myself only once a week - same day/time each week.

I have lost 27 lbs. and 19.5 inches so far - and I will tell you that while the weight loss has been great it has been the reality of the inches lost that has really kept me going!

    Good luck!!
