Sodium

I recently added sodium to my food diary. It gives me under 2,500 as a goal. I know sodium isn't great for us and it does make us retain water.

My question is... how much sodium is too much sodium? I know MFP can be off in their goals sometimes. Is 2,500 too high?

Mine says that too, but I like to keep mine below 2000. Not sure if even that is too high though.

For me, if I stay under 2500..I don't retain as much water. Sometimes though (frequently actually) I go over...way over, and as such gain water weight for a couple days. Evil, evil sodium, even though I don't use salt to cook..I get it from whats already in the food (I'm not too worried about it), I still manage to have an overabundance of the stuff. Makes me wonder what my moms sodium intake looks like since she adds salt to everything and I mean everything(pizza, mac & cheese, ect).

I believe I read in the past that we should try to stay under 2100/day. Of course having even less than that is even better. I usually try to stay under 2000 just to be safe.

Thank you for the input! I kept coming up with conflicting answer's on Google. Some recommend 2,300, others say 1,000 per 1,000 calories. 2,000 just seems awfully high. I was just curious if people had adverse side effects or notice a difference when their salt intake is high. While my cholesterol is borderline high, my blood pressure has always been really good. I do admit to salting though. I have been doing really well not salting my veggies. I had cabbage tonight and I just used a generic cabbage with salt from the list and it was like 700mg of sodium. I was floored. I may need to figure it out myself since I know how much salt I used. My water weight just seems to fluctuate a lot. I feel really bloated one day and not the next. I thought it might be my sodium which is why I added it to my diary and asked :)

I've heard both 2500 and 2000 for limits. As much as everyone says less is better, there is also a minimum so keep that in mind as well. I'm not really a fan of salt so I need to consciously add it to everything. If I don't get enough sodium, within less than 24 hours I'll have health issues.
