NSV - almost ran 10k on my lunch break!

I am not a runner. I've never thought of myself as a runner. But, maybe I am?!

A month or so ago, I decided since i'm fitter and healthier than I've ever been in my life, to run a Memorial 5k that's coming up at the end of May. And so I thought I'd start training for it. A few weeks ago I ran my first 3 miles (5k) on the gym treadmill. I was so proud of myself!

And a co-worker who is a runner said we should go running together and she'd give me a few pointers and stuff...well, on Monday we ran (well, jogged) together and ran 4.15miles (6.6km). I had never done that before! And then today, we went running again at lunch and...my co-worker kept me distracted by talking, and said to me when we reached our destination, how would you feel if I told you you could run 10k (5.8miles)...and I said, I don't know, I'd be really surprised!

Well, by the time we got back to work, and based on my friend's Runkeeper app on her iphone, we had run 9.42k (5.8 miles)!!!

I am totally exhausted and feel like a zombie (and have all day since we got back!) but...I am amazed, surprised, stunned and PROUD of myself! :) My friend/co-worker said that usually we wouldn't have run so far so soon, but she wanted to show me what I was capable of (and we ran at a real easy pace, so that we could talk the entire time - it took me an hour and 10 minutes!).

I feel like crap now (after having a nap when I got home from work lol) but I feel SO GOOD!

and now I know I can run the 5k next month, and I look forward to moving onto bigger things in the future (maybe a half marathon!)

Congratulations! =) I also used to HATE running!

I had a similar NSV 2 days ago! I only made it 4 miles.. but it is exciting when your body pushes farther then you thought it could! <3

That is so great! I can mimick your sentiments about never having thought of myself as a runner before and I too have a 5K run at the end of the month to raise month for a specialized autistic school here in Montreal. A few weeks ago I ran 5K just to see what it would feel like and I managed to be sub 28min! Then the other day I was out of town (in Boston) and one of my amazing MFP-runner friends said "you should go running along the Charles River, it's so nice". So I planned a little 6K route and headed out along the river and it was the most amazing run since all of the rowing teams were out on the water praticing. i felt like I was in the movie "Dead Poets Society" or something! I actually had a smile on my face just looking out into the water and seeing the teams out there rowing. It was so cool! And then I missed my turn off and ended up running 8K instead!

Good for you for getting out there and pushing yourself! Good luck with your race...after doing 10K, 5K will be super easy!

    Thanks so much everyone!

Yes, I've found an awesome running buddy - a girl at work who's been a runner for 10+ years, so she knows what she's talking about when giving me advice on posture, what to wear/not to wear, when to eat...lots of good advice! :). I went out and bought new running shoes when I first decided to start to 'train' for this 5k next month (now I know I can do it, and now i'll build up my runs slowly, so I don't injure myself).

I know i'm going to be sore tomorrow!

@bodycombatgirl - that is awesome that you ended up running 8k the other day! wow! it sounds like a beautiful run/route! no wonder you lost track of where you were going to turn off and ended up running further! It's a gorgeous sunny day here in Vancouver, and I'm hoping it will be a nice day for the 5k at the end of May (an annual Memorial run for a local police officer that was killed in the line of duty 26 years ago here). Part of the route is along a seawall here, so it should be pretty! . After today, yes I am thinking the 5k will be super easy!
