Loose dogs :(

I went jogging this evening with my dogs ON A LEASH and we ran into a bit of trouble. There were 3 dogs running around loose with no one watching them or anything. So when they came up to us, all running and noisy, my big sweet dog got protective. One of them jumped on my little dog, so my big one grabbed it and pulled it off, hurt it a bit, spooked it a lot. It was limping and bleeding a little. I found the owners and explained what happened. They were nice enough and I brought them some wrapping tape and guaze to help out because they only had bandaids. It looks like the dog will be fine, but the whole thing stressed me out. I was upset with my dog at first, but then again, he was leashed, and he was only trying to protect me and my other dog. He's a very calm and friendly dog, but he steps up when he needs to, which is why I bring him with me when I run. I was upset with them for letting their dogs just run around like that because so much more could have happened. These people always have their dogs out. They have no fence at all. So, now, I feel like I have to avoid that road just to keep our dogs seperated. I'm irritated and worried about their dog, and just all sorts of bummy right now. :(

Hmmmm, i will share a workable solution of sorts. I grew up in the country and some people found it rather funny or sport like to keep their dogs unchained, apparently this made it easier for them to chase me down the road, up a tree on top of a car etc.. so I went out and bought a simple water gun. filled it with a mixture of water and amonia. strong enough to deter but not enough to harm. the smarter dogs caught on quick and all I had to do was show the my plastic water gun lol.

Animal control? If the owners have to pay a fine to get their dogs back, then it may act as a better deterrent. Hit 'em where it hurts. I always feel bad for the loose dogs-it is not their fault, and they could get seriously injured running loose. The problem is the owners.

report them. It's probably illegal to always have their dogs running loose. It sure is here.

My only worry with this or reporting them is that if they don't care enough to keep their dogs safe in the first place, then they won't care enough to pay a fine and the dogs would be put down. And I totally agree - the problem is the owners, not the dogs.

Water gun is good idea - ammonia not necessary. If you get it in their eyes, it can blind them.

Good to know about the ammonia. Thanks!

This is not always the case. My dog, for instance, is always on a leash or the tie-down in the backyard. Every now and then he gets loose because he is considerably larger and stronger than I am. My neighbor Sam has joined me at times in chasing him down. But to say that the dogs are not always at fault for being loose is just not right in all cases. I *never* let my dog out without hooking him up to the leash or the tree, but often times he'll break loose. I have scars on my knees to prove it. Being out ran by a dog who has just pulled me down a hill is not cool...

While I realize that most other loose dogs are probably set loose on purpose for whatever reason, a blanket statement claiming that we all do that is just wrong.

But I do like the squirt gun idea. I would have never thought of that.

Aww, I'm sorry that happened to you. *hugs* Don't feel bad, your dog was on a leash. Their dogs weren't, so it's their problem.

I see it all the time when I'm walking on a trail that specifically says dogs need to be on leash. My dog is a big one, and gets hyper when he see other dogs coming. It's annoying to have to wait for people to get their dogs under control and back on a leash when they weren't supposed to be off it in the first place.
