Airplane food ideas

I'm going to Vegas in 1 week and 1 day. My husband pointed out we will be on a flight from 10:15am-3:30pm and all the flight offers are snacks, a turkey wrap and a salad. We don't want any of those things, especially since they are wayyyy overpriced for a tiny amount of food. I need some lunch ideas that are healthy but substantial. Any ideas?

Side note: The hubby wont eat beans.

Bring apples, hard boiled eggs, peanut butter sandwich, veggies, things that are easy to pack but fill you up.

For shorter flights I tend to grab a Subway at the airport and take it on with me.

Careful with the peanut butter sandwich, a number of flights I've been on lately have had instructions from the attendants not to open or consume anything with peanuts as there was a person with severe allergies on board and it was enough for the particles to get into the recycled air system! I don't take anything with peanuts on flights anymore.

For that kind of situation, I tend to pick up a GoPicnic. It's a pre-packed snack meal that contains stuff like crackers and turkey slices or hummus, nuts, trail mix, a little piece of chocolate--essentially they're Lunchables for health-conscious adults. They often sell them at airports, but it's much more economical to buy at the grocery store. Usual price is about $4 each at Target, maybe $5 elsewhere, but they're sometimes on sale for $3-3.50. No refrigeration necessary.

Sure, you could put together something similar for yourself for cheaper, but when I'm setting off on a trip I'll gladly pay $3-4 to have one less thing to worry about.

If you haven't seen them, here's the website: http://www.gopicnic.com/

I wouldn't bother. Eat a normal breakfast before you leave, and don't stress the flight hunger. If you think you're going to be really hungry mid-flight, grab a couple bananas or a protein bar at the airport because they sell those everywhere. I wouldn't recommend eating more than a mid-morning snack because of flight indigestion. A five hour flight isn't very long. Have a lunch when you land. It'll be noonish there anyway. Better to be hungry for a big lunch than have airplane indigestion because of eating during a flight.

I've flown around the world more times than I can count (12+ hour flights), WITH KIDS, and packing food from home for a flight isn't worth it. You have to make up food, then pack it, then wriggle yourself around in your tiny seat to get to it, then you have the trash from it to deal with that the flight attendants won't pick up for about an hour (unless you eat it immediately, which defeats the purpose of packing food for the flight). Or, you spend all that time making it, and then leave it sitting on the kitchen counter and come home to rotting food. Even when I fly with the kids, who are really young, I pack a ziplock bag of goldfish crackers that almost never get eaten or get crushed all over the floor because they fall asleep 30 minutes into the flight.

I usually just buy something at the airport if we are going near a meal time...but I still pack things like granola bars, fruit, crackers. I am sure you'll get some great ideas, but as someone else said, I wouldn't suggest the peanut butter sandwich (although I could totally eat one right now) b/c you DO NOT want your meal to get tossed at security. It'll take up unnecessary time and you'll just be angry that you not only spent time and money on that food, but you'll also have to buy new food for the flight.

That's a pretty short flight so I'd probably just bring an apple with some nut butter, a sandwich, and/or baby carrots. Don't forget that you can't bring liquids through security so I'd buy a large bottle of water in the airport to keep you hydrated.

I travel internationally a lot for work and I've found that the vegetarian options on flights tend to be better than the standard meal, IMHO. So, that's one option. I hate to rely on airport food because I find the quality usually to be poor and the prices inflated. So, I try to eat before I get there.

Also, when I travel, I think beyond the flight itself. Flights get delayed, taxis get stuck in traffic, I'm outside of my usual routine and sometimes get hungry with no healthy food options in sight. So, I usually carry nuts and dried fruit, or something similar for an easy snack, not just for the plane, but while on my trip. I also carry a reusable water bottle and some protein shake powder. It's all light and easy to carry, but are great to have in a pinch.

    Have a great trip!

I would be so excited and scared (aerophobia) hunger would be the last of my worries.Make some air popped corn before you go dress it up how you like and stash it in your purse. Perfect for the in-flight movie! Other than that you wont starve just eat when you land.

    This made me laugh.

My husband is making more of a big deal out of it more than me honestly. haha. I'm sure we will survive in whatever we do. We will be on a plane at 5:30am so I bet you anything we will want our lunch at like 10 haha.
