Getting back into running!

Hello everyone!
I've recently gotten that itch to start running again. I've always loved running, and I actually spent my entire high school career running track (distance) and cross country. One of my goals has always been to finish a marathon, and hopefully keep running them afterwards to improve my time.

The problem is that I haven't really been running much since I graduated in 2007. I still go for a run every other weekend or so, usually for 20-30 minutes. I can still run a 5k without killing myself or having to stop, though at a horribly slow pace. I'm trying to figure out where to start my training, but I'm horribly lost. I saw the Couch to 5k program, but I can already do a 5k without needing to stop, albeit at a slow pace.

I'm still in at least decent shape. I actually just ran (walked?) the Tough Mudder back in October. I found the below program earlier, but it's geared for a 5k, not a marathon. Though maybe it's a good starting point? Just looking for some advice for someone who used to be a very active runner and trying to get back into it!

Your first priority should be to establish training frequency, start out with something like 5k 3 times a week. Every week.

Once you have established the habit of getting out there regular you will find it comes back fairly quickly, in fact you need to guard against things like shin splints because you will be able to ramp up volume faster than someone who has never run.

So take it steady, establish a routine, then set a goal. 10k or 1/2 Mara, whatever gets your mojo revving!
  • That makes a lot of sense! Thanks a ton for the advice.
I actually went out and ran a 5k yesterday after work, and feel great today. A little sore, but it's definitely not a bad-sore or anything like that. I'm actually looking forward to getting back out there again, most likely tomorrow.
