hi everyone i need some help. Today i had my monthly check up with my diabetes nurse and she found a high level of ketones in my urine. It's the first time i've ever tested positive for them and am now being monitored over the next couple of weeks to c if they leave my system. Has anyone else had this problem and if so what did u do to get rid of them?? I absolutely don't want to end up with Ketoacidosis so i need as many ideas as possible. My diary is open to anyone that is willing to also have a look n c if i need to adjust anything. i increased my calories to from 1310 as i was told that maybe i'm not eating enough?! so confused about this one!

You aren't tracking protein, but ketones are just the by product of protein metabolism. Did your doctor mention them actually being a problem? Their may be some concern with them indicating other problems related to your diabetes, but ketones are usually only an issue for people with kidney problems.
As a matter of fact, low carb diets all lead to ketone production, so the only way to address them is eat less protein and more carbs, which doesn't sound like very good advice for a diabetic.0 -
thanks heaps, yeah she said that ketones in a diabetic is not good but didn't explain it further. i have to eat a certain amount of carbs each day which i am doing, so i will monitor my protein from now on. thank you0

OP- Did the hospital staff not give you advice on how to deal with this condition? I am not in the human medical field, but I do know the best treatment for DKA is to get your blood glucose level under control.
ETA: OP, if you don't feel you got adequate advice from your nurse, I implore you to seek advice from another medical professional. As I mentioned, DKA is a deadly condition. NOT something you ask for advice from random internet strangers for. You've already seen from the first reply that people will give wrong and harmful advice because they are not medical professionals. It says this at the bottom of the screen for a reason:

I'm diabetic and have had diabetic ketoacidosis several times and the ONLY reason I let it come back was because of high blood sugars. Get them under control. PERIOD. I am doing much better with them A1C of 8.7 yay mee.. But to help get rid of them you should drink lots of water. Ketones leave the body through the urine and when it gets really bad through your breath. If you ever have a hard time breathing heavy, go to the hospital! But to get rid of them: 1. blood sugar control and 2. drink plenty of water to flush them out.0

I had to check often for ketones when I had gestational diabetes. It was often high when my glucose was high. Are you sticking to the carb count or going over? Dieting and having ketones is different than having diabetes and ketones. It can be dangerous when tou have diabetes. I had a diabetes counselor who helped me when I needed to adjust my diet and insulin. Could you ask your doctor about seeing a nutritionist?0

Ketones are not a by product of protein metabolism but rather fat metabolism. In a diabetic it could mean not enough insulin floating around. It could be that you r not eating enough carbohydrate(but from your diary it looks like u r) or high blood sugars requiring insulin. Did she say if u were spilling a small, moderate, or high ketones? If small it could just be bc u r dieting, but if large and with high blood sugars you may need insulin. You can actually buy ketostix over the counter and test at home.
I am not a doctor but am a diabetes educator. First make sure you have good glucose control. If u r eating right and numbers r high, u may need some insulin.....0 -
