New job: opportunity to accelerate weight loss

I am starting a new job that is going to require me to live out a hotel 10 days out of every 14, while working outside eight hours a day. The work will not be super strenuous but it will be active. It will involve carrying equipment, digging holes with hand tools, setting up survey equipment, sitting down and taking notes (although I will be more often standing than sitting). I suspect I will be doing more note taking than shoveling--maybe only 2 or 3 hours of shoveling in an eight hour day.

My problem is, I am not sure how to record this in my cardiovascular exercises. I considered using gardening, but I think that may overestimate the calories burning. It was something like 1300kcal for 5 hours of gardening. So next I tried carpentry, which was around 800kcals for 5 hours. Regardless of what I pick, I am going to underestimate the time--5 hours instead of 8.

I think this would be a great opportunity to end this plateau and getting to my goal, as long as I don't overeat in the hotel room, but that is a topic for a different post

My advice: don't track it as exercise. Change your food diary settings to moderately active.

Could you just change your activity level and leave it at that? If you are set to sedentary than just change it to active and that should take care of it.

I would also suggest changing your activity level. I wouldn't log that as exercise.

Do you have your activity level set to sedentary? If so maybe change that to light activity instead. That way, you will get maybe 100 or 200 more extra calories, and you won't have to worry about over calculating. Another thing you could do is to keep your calories at the amount that they are. If you feel like you are not getting enough food/nutrition after a day or two, then up your calories. Good luck. I hope this definitely gets you off of your plateau.

Thanks everyone! Unfortunately for me, I am short, so even if I change my activity level to light activity it does not change my calorie intake at all.

    Sedentary @ 1lb per week = 1200 cal
    Light activity @ 1lb per week = 1200 cals
    or,
    Light activity @1/2lb per week = 1390
