HRM? Is it useful for weight loss?

How much do they cost? What sorts of things can it tell me? Apart from my heart rate...I got that :)

The most accurate HRM comes with a chest strap. A lot of people recommend Polar brand, but since I'm on a tight budget I got a Pyle Sports HRM off amazon for $26.

    Features of mine:
    -Time/Date
    -Present Heart Rate
    -Maximum Heart Rate
    -Average Heart Rate
    -Target Zone Setting
    -1/100 sec Stop Watch
    -Calories Burnt
    -Daily Alarm
    -User Setting (Vo2max, Age, weight)
    -LED Backlight
    -Energy Saving Function
    -water resistance: 33 feet/10 meters/1 ATM

HRM's are good for getting a more accurate calorie burn from cardio workouts. Mine is pretty basic, but it works pretty well.

I will say this from my experience Sportline is not a good brand. I had two that gave me an estimate of triple my actual calorie burn.

edit: Post below reminded me to mention, that the one I use does allow you to change the batteries in both the watch and chest strap.

I didn't have one for a long time...I was trying to go without one. I got some extra cash back from our taxes and decided to try one out. I figure I could always return it if I didn't like it.

I really feel like it has helped me reach my goals better. I was amazed how far the gym machines are off when it comes to burning calories. Even the MFP app was off (at least for me) when I entered in my workouts. My HRM has helped me be more consistent. I always go in with a calorie burn number in mind (250-450) and keep working until I hit that number.

I actually got a New Balance one from Target that I'm super happy with. Mine was close to $70 but I waited until it was on sale and spent right around $53 for mine.

There are a ton online as well. Just get one that allows you to replace the battery in the arm and chest strap. Some of them don't let you change the chest strap battery - which will limit how long it will last.
  • I got mine at Big 5. I love it! They always have sales, I got mine for 29.95. It is a New Balance, very easy to use. I would be lost without it.
