I love popcorn....I'm trying to figure out the total nutrition count...there are several entries for Orville Redenbacher's Movie Theater Butter popcorn...None of the database numbers that a search pulls up seem to be totally correct based on the box information...I 've tried several ways of calculating it and there doesn't seem to be one entry where all of the values come out correct following the same calculation....Here is the info

serving size 1tbsp. (35g) unpopped
(makes about 4.5 cups popped)
Servings per bag: about 2.5

Amount per serving

Calories 2 tbsp unpopped 1 cup popped
170 35

fat 12g
carbohyrdates 16g
fiber 1g
protien 2g

I'm not sure I understand how calories drop from 170 to 35 when popped...also do I add the calories together or just count the popped calories. Any help would be great. Popcorn is one of my reward foods and I don't want to improperly track it....

Thanks B

do you only eat microwave popcorn?

you can probably cut a lot of the fat and salt (and god knows what else) by home popping or even better, maybe: air popping.

If you want some mind-blowing popcorn, try the stuff from Popcornopolis. I typically hate popcorn, but can't keep my hands off their stuff. That's saying a lot!

my first guess is that 1c popped corn is probably significantly less kernels than 2tbs unpopped corn.

Wow that is hilarious that I found this post, because me and my grandma are both on MFP and we were arguing about the exact same brand and kind of popcorn last night and today! We are totally confused by the labelling because it says one serving makes 4.5 cups, which can't be right because the bag says it makes 2.5 servings, but there is only like 2.5 cups in the bag. I hope you figure this out because i would like to know what's up with it, too. I think something is wrong with the labelling and it should be less confusing!

I made it very simple on myself by buying Orville R's smart pop 94% fat free single packs and they are each 100 cals. I would typically always air pop because it's by far healthier but dang it my popcorn popper died after 100 years of working. lol

Here's the hint, you're eating the POPPED corn, not the unpopped, if you ate the bag of popcorn before you popped it you would be eating FAR more fat/sodium than if you only ate what popped (lots of grease and sodium & unpopped corn left on the bottom and sides of the bag maybe is what it's about...it's a mystery). That's really what it comes down to. I stared at that box then saw the single pkg had 4 packs of popcorn and easier to understand cals info. lol That's why I bought it plus if I make the popcorn, it gets eaten, ick you can't save old microwave popcorn, am I right? So I make one serving, I eat one serving. It's a win win for me.

Like pasta, dry vs. cooked , don't think too hard about or it'll drive you crazy:laugh:

The 1 tbl makes 4.5 cups popped
    1tbl=170 calories

    170/4.5= 37~ calories.

Each bag of popcorn has 9 cups of popped corn, right? 37cals*9cups=333 calories/bag?

Does it have to do with the density? A cup of popcorn is fluffy so to speak, where a tablespoon of kernels is 'dense'.

I had all this figured out at one time....LOL Now I'm brain dead! Take a look at these other options:

    See perhaps:
    http://forum.purseblog.com/health-and-fitness/calorie-conundrum-bag-microwave-popcorn-need-your-math-452765.html

    Also to quote:
    "Author: organicisbest [ Sun Jul 05, 2009 10:32 pm ]
    Post subject: Re: popcorn calories?
It's impossible for a bag of that Movie Theater Butter popcorn to only have 88 calories in it... this is how I always calculated it. So there are 2.5 servings per bag, and 2 tablespoons is equal to 170 calories so that must mean that...

    2.5 Servings x 2 Tablespoons = 5 Tablespoons in the Bag

    170 Calories x 2.5 Servings = 425 Calories

So 5 Tablespoons Popcorn = 425 Calories, so if you ate the entire bag of popcorn than you would be consuming 425 Calories. Typically, there is about 12 cups of popcorn in a bag which would make sense because 425/12 = 35.4 Calories per cup just like the bag states. "

PS: I just sent an email to ConAgra/Orville Reddenbacher to get the final answer as to the bag full of calories, and the correct formula.

Think of it as a density thing. You'll be eating 1 cup of popcorn, NOT 2 T. of popcorn, right? Popcorn pops because it has a bit of moisure within the kernel, once heated it pops the kernel open and of course then the volume changes. Right? So if you think of 2 T. of unpopped vs. 1 cup of popped corn, the cals would definitely not be anywhere near the same.

    Clear as mud now?

First, I have a question. Next to the fat content, do you see a little star (It's looks like this- *). The amount of fat, carbs, etc on the label is for UNPOPPED, whereas we need it for popped. That * will tell you that we need to look further down to see the values for POPPED popcorn. Once you have those values, you need to use them for one cup POPPED. But how many cups are in that bag of popcorn?

    Okay, here's the deal.
There are 2.5 servings in the entire bag. One serving can either be 2 tbs unpopped, or 4.5 cups popped. Since you are recording how much you ate AFTER you popped it, then you should count how many cups popped. Well, we need to multiple the popped values by the number of servings to figure out how many cups popped are in the entire bag.
Now, when we multiple 2.5 (servings in bag) by 4.5 (cups in each serving), we get 11.25. This is how many cups we have in the entire bag.

So, 11.25 cups times 35 cals per cup gives you 393.75 cals in the entire bag. Not too bad, especially if you split a bag with someone.

I came up with 394 also..intersting about the other stats being unpopped only....

Okay follow the 11.25 cups per bag...makes sense to me ...I didn't notice the asterisk before...heres note...

As popped 1 cup provides 2 g of total fat, 40mg sodium, 35mg potassium, and 4g total carbohydrates

    Let's follow the logic...

    11.25 * 2 g fat = 22.5g per bag
    11.25 * 40mg sodium = 450mg per bag
    11.25 * 35mg potassium = 393.75 per bag
    11.25 * 4g carbs = 45 per bag

Sounds too good to be true....

Girl! you're already working the cals offa the popcorn with your brain working so hard! :flowerforyou: I know crazy pkg'n, same with pasta on some boxes but I now understand that.

NOW you see why I got the single serve packs? lol But then again I didn't burn as many cals as you did working out the math:cry::wink:

Nope! Popcorn, while not nutritionally dense, does provide quite the bang for your back (again, calorie-wise, not nutrition-wise).

edit: >> (oh, i thought you said bang for your buck!) :)

i hope everyone realizes that microwave popcorn is way, way way way more expensive than loose corn, which is like $1.45/lb for organic (and way cheaper for "traditional gmo style" which is something like 89¢ /lb)

1lb of popcorn is (oh, i don't know how many, but ) a TON of popped corn. like maybe 8c? if there are 16tbs /cup, that means there are 128 tbs in a pound (roughly)

i'm just guessing, but i'd be happy to do a full on experiment if someone can give me the real numbers of weights and measures.

if there are only 2tbs of unpopped corn in each bag of landfill-destined microwavable popcorn bags, and say a box of 10 of these bags are sold for $4 (??)

    2tbs * 10 = 20tbs.

    20 tbs = 1.25 c

    @ $1.45 pr 128 tbs = roughly 2¢ /tbs

    .02 * 20 = 40¢

plus oil & butter = you're talking another quarter or so - hell, let's get splurgy and add $1.00; $1.40 for the same amount of popcorn without the ten landfill-destined bags.

I love my Presto PowerPop Microwave Multi-Popper -- the convenience of microwave popcorn without all the added extras. I use a few squirts of cooking spray and a mix of nutritional yeast and salt to flavor.

You don't need an air popper for loose kernel popcorn. Just stick 2 tbs in a paper bag, fold over the top of the bag and put it in the microwave and cook the same way you do the pre-packaged microwave bags.

No oil, no chemicals, just "air" popped in a paper bag in the microwave.

I think I have the same tub of kernels you do.

2 tbsp makes about 6 cups or something like that? It says it elsewhere on the label. so 1 cup popped is just a completely different amount.

That's awesome. I figured you could but had no idea how to do it to contain it. A bag. DUH! lol I'm going to try this. So much cheaper than paying $4 for 10 bags of single-servings like I've been doing. I love popcorn with parmesan and garlic powder. Mmmm.

Sounds too good to be true? That's a LOT of fat- over half of what many of us are allowed for a day!! Doesn't sound too good to me!!!!

I LOVE popcorn, I practically lived off the stuff. Until I did the calculations. You HAVE to read the asterisk. That will give you the information you are looking for. Now, unfortunately, you still have to do the math, because it is listed as the amount in a cup, not in a serving size or in the whole bag. So, if there are 2.5 g of fat in a cup, and 4.5 cups in a serving, one serving has 11.25, and with 2.5 servings in a bag, the whole bag has 28.125 g of fat!! (I got this information from the Act II Butter Lover's) ... That is closer to 75% of the fat many of us are allowed in a day! And how easy is it to eat an entire bag of popcorn by yourself?

Not cool. I almost died when I realized this. I started buying the 100 calorie pack ones. It limits me to that amount and is more reasonable, and I can get my butter flavor or homestyle instead of eating a big bag of the "94% fat free butter" that just tastes gross.

ok im still totally confused! i just bought popcorn bc when it said 25cals per cup popped i thought that meant i could at the entire bag for about 125 calories.......is that soo not right?

Hello! Does anyone know what's good to put on popcorn to make it tasty? I like savoury kinds rather than sweet (I could eat salt popcorn from the cinema till I explode). I can't work out how to make the plain stuff taste good though!

I also buy popcorn kernels and air pop them myself - saves me A LOT of fat/sodium.

Just thought Id share this great popcorn seasoning - since most are loaded with sodium

    http://www.epicureselections.com/en/products/Products.aspx?id=10

The one I have is the Chipotle Ranch - but Im sure they are all Delicious

All of the epicure products are low in Sodium :)

Look for "Popcorn Indiana Gourmet Kettlecorn", in bags in the chip aisle...

Comes in Cinnamon Sugar, Buffalo Cheddar, and Sea Salt, and well as plain, and they are all KILLER delicious!

Plus they're prepopped so no need to kill your brain doing the conversions. Just weigh out your 28 grams, which covers a whole paper plate in a mound, and enjoy your 130 calories (that's the cinnamon sugar, the plain is way less).
    It is SOOOOOOO yum!
