My husband had been nagging me for ages to sign up with our local personal trainer. I wasn't keen as I was worried the trainer would humiliate me and make me feel worse about myself. Well I finally agreed and 3 weeks in my life has been turned around!
Ive lost weight and my fitness has improved so much. People have started noticing the weight loss which I'm so chuffed about.
The sessions are really tough but I always feel incredible afterwards. I always seem to be in a good mood and I don't crave junk food or sugar anymore. I'm a happy bunny....

Lol, best thing you can say to a trainer: "I hate doing this exercise".

Then watch us smile as you do it.

Haha 'Ninerbuff. I don't discuss anything, just do as I am told as it's easier that way! My trainer is a really nice guy but seriously tough. I cannot believe how much my fitness has improved in just 3 weeks. Wish I'd done this years ago.

Best thing I ever did was hire a trainer. I would never have lost 101 pounds without him. He denies that and says that it was all me but I know I would not have stuck with it and/or worked as hard without him. Money well spent.

It's true though. While our job is to guide and inspire, we don't eat for you or work out for you. This is why people who have success in body transformation deserve practically all the credit. Your body is earned.

^^This is so true. Once I reached my goal weight, a gym member said to me, in front of my trainer, "Your trainer did a really good job". I smiled and replied that although he helped me along, he wasn't coming home with me to cook, watch me eat and make me exercise five times a week.

    Keep up the good work!

I love mine too! I started working with mine in October after spraining my shoulder, and I wanted some advice on what exercises I could do to help it, and what not to do, and I didn't want to get out of the routine of going to the gym. In our chats I told him I had always intended to eventually lose another 10lbs to get down to a healthy BMI, and he challenged me to do it. His workouts made me realised how hard I could work, and how many times I really wasn't working as hard as I could. I lost 13lbs, and have kept it off for 3 months now. Life has been really crazy the last few months, but the exercise has helped keep my head straight. He doesn't take my rubbish and excuses, which I needed, but is calm and supportive when I have needed that. I have some anxiety issues after past experiences was worried about pushing myself too hard and causing a panic attack and making a fool of myself in the gym - it happened once (not a major one) and he was great - just really calm, no fuss, then back on it. I still meet up with him about every 2 weeks to keep on track. I don't always like him at the time, but the results speak for themselves!

Oh ... and that pose was all for him ... he would forever try to get me to flex in the mirror at the gym and I wouldn't.

My trainer moved after 90 pounds and 3.5 years of working with him. I found another one that I like just as much but differently who helped me get back on track to lose the 15 pounds (4 more to go!) People always ask my why I still use a trainer ... don't I already know what to do & how to do it??? Yes I do but I do it with so much more intensity with them. It also helps keep me accountable. I won't break an appointment with him where I might talk myself out of going to the gym.

Bottom line ... if you can afford it - hire a trainer. Find a knowledgeable one you connect with and do what he/she says!

Trainers can definitely be super helpful! After law school, I had a little less than a year before I went on active duty with the Air Force (JAG Corps) and knew I needed to get into better shape before hand. I tried for a few months to do stuff on my own at the gym, and felt like I wasnt making any significant progress, so I hired a personal trainer, and in 5 months I went from not being able to do ANY pushups to being able to do 40+ pushups military-style. I made so many huge gains during that time. Even though I have moved far away, I still keep in touch with him because he helped me so much!

Same I only got mine in October I see him either every 2 weeks or every other week occasionally like February I missed loads of the gym . I'm starting to get him every other week more often now. More because I just need to plan mainly and I always work harder with him there but I don't want to be overly dependent on my trainer so I give it a week or two and do the workouts myself I'm okay at pushing myself.
It does make the workouts more interesting what I was doing before was okay but now it's more challenging. It's also taught me to do other workouts or use different machines I never would've used before. I always get given easier workouts at the start then it gets harder and then occasionally there might be an easier session then back to the intense workouts the next time. My trainer isn't too tough but as I usually just listen and don't make a fuss and he's really friendly . They're definitely helpful and I'd been going gym a while but doing all the wrong workouts , now I'm on the right track.
My trainers leaving soon in 7 weeks to move to another country , gonna have to pick a new trainer . They have quite a few in my gym though.

I agree wholeheartedly. IF you are lucky and do your research you can definitely find some awesome personal trainers out there!
For me, he approached me and was reeeeeally genuine and I could tell that his aim was to really guide me and not be a pretentious prick (hey they look pretty but it's short lived TRUST me ;) ) :) I have trained with him for a couple of months and definitely have seen more results (lost about 6kilos) now then my many years of solo training and training with other personal trainers!

I agree with some arguments on here though, there are some that just make you run on a treadmill and expect so much from you and treat you just like a typical client but trust me once you find the perfect one for you it is a great investment! (I only get charged $50 a session when he trains professional athletes!) I have only cancelled/rescheduled on him a couple of times (given ample notice) because if it became a habit I would pay for it through a strenous workout :/
