Weightlifting for beginners?

I have heard from many people in the fitness community that using weights and strength exercises is a really good way to build lean muscle and lose weight, but I have never done it before.
Could someone tell me how I could start doing this? Preferably with how you started weights and what it's done for you?
If you don't use weights then why not, and what exercise do you do?
Thanks in advance! xx

I can tell you that weight training has helped me lose fat. What happens is as the muscle grows, it will require more calories to keep its form and will ultimately draw from the fat stores.

When I was a beginner, I was given a head to toe workout similar to this:

My trainer started me with 3 sets instead of 1 right from the beginning.

So it's essentially 3 times a week, 3 sets of 8-10 repetitions for each exercise. Pick a weight where you can do one set not too easily (but not so heavy that you can't do at least 8 repetitions). Rest about 60 seconds between sets and then repeat.

If you need more info, just ask.

New Rules of Lifting for Women....

Has all the information you will need, including an exercise plan that covers about 6 months or so. I love it and recommend it all my female friends who say they are looking into lifting.
