I need to Purchase a new tent soon for some summer camping.
i have been looking up a bunch of different tents online and read alot of reviews. I have had the same great tent for over 10 years
and it is finally time for a new one. anyone know a great tent for a resonable price?
i am looking for a larger tent around 4-8 people

Don't laugh, BUT
I have an "Ozark." It is Wal-Mart's house brand. It has dealt with being out west (Durango, Moab, Yellowstone) for two weeks, multiple weekends, pouring rain a few times, high winds and baking sun. It is very quick to put up, maybe 10-15 minutes. It's a 4-man dome shape. Great tent and wasn't expensive.

yeah we have the same ozark 4 man. we've taken it to the mountains all the way to the beach. puts up easy (unless its really windy, and then i dont think any ten goes up easy lol ) has lots of room. its only my husband the dog and me, but the dog takes up enough room for two people. i like, it, stays warm when you need it, has nice big windows. i like walmart products.0

How many people and what kind of camping (i.e. backpack, car camp, etc)? Also, how many seasons? Budget? Are you an avid camper or just occasional, recreational camper?0

Yes, I need to know this. Need to buy gears0

I currently have coleman....and it suits what camping my husband and I do (which isn't too much because we are still in the process of building our base gear).0

its going to be used for 2 people.I like to have plenty of room. my previous tent was a 8 person tent.
seasons dont really matter. I only use it in summer and early fall.. i would like to spend less than $200.000 -
I have a Eureka! tent that I have been using for over 15 years several times a year. Great tent that has weathered all but one storm keeping us dry.
This last summer we had quarter size hail and rainfall so steady the entire mountain we were camping on turned into a river.0 -

I have a 4 man dome, think it might be the same type. It is quite a few years old, not good for cold weather camping, but I use it every year on the HOT PRAIRIE. Works great, and as a woman, I can put it up by myself if need be. It is large enought to hold a couple of Cabelas camping cots (if you have 2 people). I love it. (Oh yea, it has performed great in rain storms - I water proof it once a year).0 -

Car camping or are you hiking it in?
I Have a Eureka two man tent that the wife and I use when we do overnight or longer hiking trips. for a 2 person tent it has a lot of room (I'm 6'7 and fit just fine in it). If your car camping or driving into a camp ground the Ozarks from Walmart or the Colemans at Kmart/Sears are decent and relativity inexpensive. Really depends on what the "camp" is like in order to know what tent you need. Good luck on your search.0 -
We just bought one a year ago after our old one (like 15 years old one) finally went kaput. We got a Kelty 3 season tent, but we've used it in all four seasons
The important features to look for, in my opinion, are the "bathtub bottom" (the bottom that goes a few inches up the side rather than having a seam at the bottom) and a rain fly that goes most or all of the way down the sides.0 -
Love Eureka tents. Never had a problem and has weathered all storms. I live where there are Eureka tent store so we hit the sales they can sometimes be pricey. We had a coleman tent and the first time we put it up the plastic windows melted under the sun and we spent $120 on that one. We tend to get larger tents it used to be myself, husband, son and the dog, but I just had my daughter so we are upgrading to a larger tent I like to have room too.0

I'm partial to Big Agnes products and that's what I used for years before my pop up camper. Still have my Agnes backpacking tent though. Little steep for your price range though...for your price range, Kelty products are generally pretty nice. Some Coleman tents are good, others suck...they're kind of hit or miss. I have no experience with Eureka, but I've heard they are up to the task for the most part.
As an avid camper, the cheap stuff like Ozark just doesn't cut it. The first tent I bought on my own was an Ozark and I was in too many rain storms my first season in that thing...I promptly saved up to buy a better tent to keep me dry.
IMHO, if you're camping a lot, you can't get too cheapy...a good tent will be your home away from home.0 -
Some things I look for:
- Full rain fly...no partials. I've been in my fair share of torrential downpours and a good, full fly is your best friend.
- adequate clearance rain fly to tent for proper ventilation
- bathtub bottom
- nice tight seems (I also recommend sealing them yourself even if they say they are sealed)
- I personally like having a vestibule that I can leave dirty shoes/boots in covered...but keep out of the tent. Also good for extra storage for stuff you want covered but doesn't necessarily need to be in the tent with you taking up sleeping space.0 -
thanks everyone! i continue the search!0
