Hey guys,
I love working out...really enjoy it. Unfortunatly, I was diagnosed with costocondritis, when the cartilage in my chesty becomes irritated. I am not 100% sure I have uit, but doctors ruled out everything else. Well, I've had it since March, and the doctor said do not work out...at all ...until it clears up. So, I waited, ate cause I was sad about it, gained more, ect. I have been excersizing the last couple of wks again, and I feel fine when I do it, but later that night, my chest hurts again! I'm only doing acardio, but theres a lot of heavy heavy breathing involved. If I just walk, it wont hurt, but it will take me 3 hrs to burn the calories I want; ( Should I work through the pain, go back to the doc, or just walk ALOT, and not get my heart rate up? If I don't get my heart rate up, is the workout gonna be beneficial at all? I am too young for this crap!!

I would get cleared by the doctor before continuing anything that is hurting you. Walking is a solid exercise though.

I would suggest listening to your doctor. The calories burned by walking may be less, but at least you are getting up and moving. I'm sure your doctor would understand if you requested a follow up to discuss the issue further. How do you do in water? swimming can be a fun way to burn alot of calories without getting too out of breath. Keep up the walking and lower your intake until you can burn how much you want and you will still lose. You want to do it, so you can do it.
  • My doc also told me to remember that diet is 70-80% of successful weight loss. Remember that your heart doesn't have to beat out of your chest to be effective. Keep walking if it doesn't cause you harm/pain.

My mother always said "Get a second opinion" just in case the first doctor misdiagnoses you. That's what I would do first of all. I would seriously use this site to log all the food you're eating, etc. If you can still walk a short distance "without" any pain, then I would continue but not a very long walk, just a short walk to keep you exercising.
Even 5 or 10 minutes is ok, but in your condition - as far as what you're saying, I would definately get more tests done, and by another doctor if you can.
You don't state if you're taking any medicines.
If so, have your doctor check your meds too. Sometimes if you're on one or more than one, you may just need your meds adjusted.
Gosh, good luck, and I will be praying for you.
As things get better you'll be able to do more, but try not to stress over losing weight or exercising much at this time until you go to a doctor, hopefully another one to get another opinion.
Hope this helps. God bless you and comfort you during this time.

I have seen some people here trying to lose weight just my monitoring their calorie intake, maybe you could do that till it is cleared.
I would say don't rush into anything. there would be plenty of time to work out after this whole thing is cleared up, you can get back up. But the more you push yourself, what if it affects the healing? \

I would just say, take rest and monitor your intake so you don't gain more, maybe even lose some! After you get well, you can do all the exercise in the world! :flowerforyou:

I would agree with everybody.. work with your doctor or get a second opinion if you doubt that your doctor is right.

When you work with your doctor, ask him what you can be doing. If walk is ok, then just include regular walks into your days. Walk had been my main exercise when I was loosing the weight. I was walking everyday for about an hour and I was being very careful with my food. Does it burn calories as fast as other more intense aeorobic exercises ? No, but it still burn some and keep you moving.

I started exercising more at the end of the weight loss only. All I was doing was mainly WII fit - the yoga part and walks. So have your doctor tell you exactly what you can and cannot do and try to include those Can do in your day.

    Good luck !

thanks everyone...Im gonna see another doc...and just do light cardio for now. One thing that having this condition taught me is that I honestly do like working out. Sometimes, you don't miss something, until it's taken away. Now, I'm bored outta my mind without excersize! So I know when I can work out again, I shouldn't have a problem losing, because I'll be doing it ever day lol...I really like how it makes me feel.
