I switched from regular mochas to sugar free and fat free ones a while back. Anyone have any thoughts good or bad about sugar free and fat free mochas? I'm just having a really hard time kicking them to the curb completely. Sorry for the novice question

  • It depends on how you feel about artificial sugars.

    Coffee - not bad
Skim milk - not bad (except how it tastes)
Fake sweetened chocolate syrup - probably pretty bad, but tasty

You could try mixing up cocoa powder and stevia as a mocha "mix" and then adding that to skim milk and espresso. Probably healthier, but it takes a little effort.

Well over the last two years I went like this -
Large latte with sugar to Large Latte to Normal Latte to Double expresso (without sugar) and thats where I am at. Did not realise the calorie/sugar content previously!!!
I was having about six a day, so now have maybe two expressos a day and then mainly Green Tea with lemon....
Probably not much use on your original question, but it was my path to reducing sugary coffee :o)

I make my own syrup from cocoa powder and real sugar *gasp* and use four ounces of 2% milk. It's 85 calories total. I'll never give up sugar for artificial, and 2% milk is so much tastier.

fat free have extra sugar. sugar free probably have lots of other preservatives. i like to just mix a packet of generic hot cocoa mix into my cup. not that that's necessarily saving me from preservatives. it's only like 80 calories though.

I have been making my own at work as follows:

    1 cup of coffee
2 tbsp. FF half and half = 20 calories (you could sub regular half and half for 40 calories)
1 tbsp. Ghiradelli double chocolate hot cocoa powder = 35 calories

Still low calories, tastes awesome! I personally don't like the taste of artificial sweeteners. I've seen a lot of articles about how it's really bad for you. I don't know if I believe them, but I think the taste is worth a couple extra calories!
  • I can't give up caffiene, but I have given up artifical sweetners. I make my own iced coffees, etc...I have a Mr. Coffee Keruig knock off. I buy those k-cups made for iced coffees, I use either a tsp. of real sugar, or I like stevia (natural sweetner) and the Natural Bliss creamers, which are now 20 calories a serving. My coffee calories are usually under a 100 when I make it at home.

Is this from a specific place? Some cafes, the baristas will totally be about helping you find a balanced drink that you like :):):)

Sometimes sugar free stuff can make people more hungry and result in sore muscles.
Fat free stuff does tend to have more sugar but it's negligiable, really.

I had your issue a bit with lattes. I LOVE hazelnut and I also drink soymilk. Fat and sugar.
Since soy is already a little sweet I can go without flavored syrups now but occasionally get sugar free or sometimes just a little bit of syrup (so an extra 40 cals).

Mochas are my "I'm depressed" drink and sugar free chocolate does a number of my intestines.
That's just me though. (hullo TMI)

If the ingredients don't bother you, or make your more hungry or whatever, go for it!

Most of the time I just have home brewed coffee w/ soymilk as you can see in my diary (every freaking day!! LOL)

Is Stevia actually any healthier than say, Splenda? I have both here at home and aren't they both processed? At any rate, just looking for lower carb alternatives.

I don't mind going with skim milk (although I prefer soy), but I would rather do half sweet over sugar free. Mochas are a rare treat for me though, so I prefer to just fit them in once and awhile than torture myself with something I don't really like.
