Hepatitis C and eating fats

Hi, I am under treatment for Hep C geno 1a and having trouble finding healthy fats. I am vegan and just found out I received hep c in a 1990 blood transfusion. The treatment is very difficult and making matters worse is having to eat at least 20 grams of fat before taking my meds. Can't drink them....have to eat them. I don't want to eat cream cheese and the like. So fat walnuts, almonds, avacodos, olive oil on a salad and sunflower seed peanut butter seem my only options. Anyone else out there fighting the dragon?

I would suggest that you should care for your health more than your philosophy and eat what you need to in order to get better0

Thats terrible! Im sorry that happened to you.
Healthy fats like the ones you suggested are probably best.0 -
Thank you everyone....I hate the ingestion of fats not only because of the calories (600-900) a day but getting pretty of the limited number of healthy fats.
Good luck everyone0 -
Sorry...I meant to say "getting pretty sick of..."0

Talk to a doctor, and ask for a referral to an informed dietician. This is not something you want to ask strangers on the internet for help with.
Are you on chemo or a milder treatment? (I ask because I know someone who was put on chemo for hep C, but that's the extent of my knowledge about this disease.) If you're on chemo, there are tons of boards that will be better than MFP for your specific problem.0 -
Do you like Thai food, particularly Thai curries? Full fat coconut milk is like 100 calories a serving and I think 90% fat. It's healthy fat though (well mostly). I love them, and they can easily be made vegetarian with just vegetables or tofu.
Me, I'd use it as an excuse to eat anything with cream, and fry stuff and dip it in gravy But I understand trying to stay healthy. Try other nuts if you get tired of them - macadamia nuts? I like those. Whole fat milk and yogurt and cheese, yum! Not healthy fats, I know, but you need fat now.
I understand your frustration with the extra calories. Do you have any exercise restrictions? If not, maybe just add some additional exercise to burn the extra calories?0 -
Hemp seeds and chia seeds... bits of cheese... if not dairy or goat.... try soy or almond cheese.0

I did the same treatment this past year and it was difficult eating 20 grams of fat, 3x a day! Eggs, milk, nuts were a great way to get in the fat while still getting good nutrients. Cheese is also high in fat. Staying hydrated with water and mild exercise everyday helped me not gain too much weight. I've heard people gained 50lbs in that 3 month period but obviously they went overboard with the eating and no exercise. Even though you have to eat all that fat in order for the medicine to absorb, it's very important to continue with healthy eating habits and exercise. I noticed I felt worse on the days I didn't drink very much water and didn't exercise. Good luck with your treatment! I was diagnosed when I was 10 and have done 3 rounds of treatments. The new advances in medicine are very promising and I have been undetectable since week 4 of this treatment. Even though the treatment seems never-ending, it will get easier.0
