Fasting --> Vomitting / Fainting ?

Ok so I've come to the realization that..
My body is dumb.
A few years ago I was able to do Intermittent Fasting, and I felt good! I began my fast at 8pm and broke it at noon the following day.
This past week I was trying to get back into IF because if I eat in the mornings I get really sluggish/weighed down and fall asleep in my classes and junk, I'd also start craving more food in the middle of class..
BUT. I find myself having my last meal at ~8pm, then when I wake up at 5am, if I don't eat by 6am, then I vomit or faint. Its just bile and usually for a few seconds but the feeling is not fun. I tried to fast during the day, because I thought maybe I needed to eat as soon as I woke up then I would be fine.. Eat from 5am to 2pm, felt good going to bed at 9pm.. but I woke up at 2am and had to run to the bathroom to vomit.
I know-- go to the doctor. But my doctor really doesn't have any advice for me other than "well, then don't fast."
I eat 1700 - 1800 cals a day.
I just kinda want to know why..

Go get tested for thyroid and hypoglycemia. I'd put money on the hypoglycemia, but you can't be sure until you get it checked. Endocrinologist is your best bet. Still won't be able to fast.0

I wouldn'y say your body was dumb...more confused!
I'm no expert but I have heard that eating little and often is best, as your body needs the calories to function, even at a minimum rate. Maybe your body is really confused because you're eating so much in a shorter space of time then starving it? Do you exercise a lot?0 -

So- I'm kind of on the don't fast train here.. but if you're anything like me that's not going to happen.
With that in mind my suggestions are to:
A. Try and stay hydrated and drink plenty of water during the fast periods.
B. Some IF programs say you can have up to 50 calories and still be fasting.. so maybe you can nibble on something low cal in the morning to put something in your stomach to get you over that 10 hour hump.. This doesn't really seem like a huge fasting issue (since many people go 10 hrs without eating without an issue)
And I must mention that a lot of women have "morning sickness" because there's stomach gets empty and the hormones are out of whack... and they recommend snacking on little cheerios or something first thing in the morning to get something in your stomach without upsetting it... So- maybe you could look into your hormones?
IDK what is up with the fainting... for the first week or so of IF I would have brief moments of dizziness while my body was adjusting ... if IF made me faint I probably wouldn't do it...0 -
If you can't skip breakfast without puking, something is wrong with your body. Most likely you have a small stomach that requires you eat smaller meals instead of large meals. There's a medical term for it, i just can't think of it right now.0

Seriously, your doctor may be on to something. It's funny how you're not listening to your doctor who has all this education and knows about you and your body but you're willing to listen to posts on a website from people who don't know you from Adam. Hmmmm. Just a thought.0

"well, then don't fast."
seems like that should handle that0 -

Fasting is not for everyone0

Well it just annoys me that I used to be able to fast, you know ? I don't mind not fasting, but the fact that I can't kind of makes me want to do it more or figure out whats wrong. I don't exactly trust my doctor because he never thinks theres anything wrong with me when I have a chronic sore throat, and as you can see, faint / vomit if I don't eat every so often. So I kinda feel forced to self-diagnose so I can at least be aware.. I guess I'm conducting experiments on myself, idk.
I would go with the idea that I have a small stomach and need more frequent meals or something-- but that simply isn't true. I can eat, eat, eat and never feel full. Which makes snacking a HUGE problem for me, and it made me fall in love with IF. If I was fasting and not eating, then I wouldn't snack / crave food. The only reason I stopped was because my schedule got all wacky-crazy. I had classes from 7am - 2pm then work from 3pm - 10pm, so I never had a full meal, just lots of snacking. Could lots of snacking lead to hypoglycemia ? Like the constant flow of sugar got me used to it and now that there isn't a constant intake my body is kind of WTF? Wasn't necessarily bad foods, but I was eating at least every other hour.0 -
Yes, if you don't like your doctor's recommendations, seek another doctor's recommendation. Don't put your health in jeopardy. We are all striving for BETTER health, not declining health.0

While waiting on some doctors tests (I agree with previous posts) try something new. Instead of 'fasting,' have a liquid diet day or a vegetarian day. What about a fruit only day? So it's not so much fasting, but you alter your diet for a day.
I have a juice day about once a month and drink fruit/veggies all day just for something different.0 -

I'm not going to answer the last questions, because those are way out of my realm of knowledge, but as someone who grew up believing that two meals a day is ideal for adults with average metabolism (my husband has way-above average metabolism and really needs 3 meals a day most days), I would say that perhaps you need to adjust when you eat. I can't remember if you said when you go to bed, but if you are going to bed with food in your stomach (ie, before 11 or 12 or maybe earlier, depending on how much and what you ate), then perhaps that is a contributing factor.
Also, you said that eating breakfast had some negative side effects. Could it be that you are eating the wrong kinds of food for you for breakfast? 500 calories of doughnuts and 500 calories of oatmeal, milk, and fruit are so different! Or an egg and whole grain toast (not just 100% wheat, but something really substantial (and expensive if you don't make it yourself). Or however many calories you would eat for breakfast. If you eat a low-sugar, higher protein/carb meal with a decent amount of fat, you shouldn't be sluggish or have issues. My husband had beans, rice, some grilled veggies, guacamole, and a boiled egg for breakfast, and he had energy for like 7 hours! Granted, my husband is a special case (he works out to gain weight and at almost 40 is a size 30 waist). But still, eating nutritious food in the morning might help. Then again, maybe you're doing that already and really do have some health problem. In which case, I'd go see a naturopath. They are more expensive, but often so worth it if you can find a good one. I get that you don't trust your doctor; I don't trust mine either. The last time I went to her, it was to get a referral for physical therapy, and the next time will probably be for a pap smear or something like that. I rarely get sick (avoiding GMOs seems to keep colds at bay--only had one this winter, right after eating a bunch of GMO-laden junk, and I was over it in like a week when I went back to my healthy diet.)
Anyhow, I hope you figure it out. I remember morning sickness (3 times over), and vomiting on an empty stomach is NOT fun!0 -
Fasting is not for everyone
This. It's not magical. You can definitely be successful without it.0 -

I used to be able to put both feet behind my head. Then I hit 30 and now I can only get one.
Point is bodies change as you age -- so you can't fast anymore.I am with your doctor, I don't think anything is wrong with you -- other than you maybe want their to be something wrong with you. If you have serious doubts, see another doctor.0 -
BULL****,,, u are not doing it right,, there is a good group here on this,,0

never understood why they call it fasting when it goes sooooo slowly.0

From 8 pm to 6 am? The majority of people I know don't eat between those hours to begin with!
I think you need to get more thoroughly checked out. That doesn't seem like an IF problem.
I've been fasting for 24 hrs twice a week for the past three weeks. The first time I got lightheaded after about the 20-hour mark. I've had no problems since then.
You might be hypoglycemic or something.0 -

I agree. The act of "Fasting" does not seem to be her problem as she can't skip breakfast after eating dinner. A normal person can skip one meal without puking. There is something else going on.0 -
I've been fasting for a week (18/8 or 16/10) and have been okay.
However, yesterday, for the first time I tried a low day with a 500 calorie deficit. This makes me nervous as I've been fine on 2000 calories (mod/tdee). If I have your symptoms, I'm definitely upping my calories on low days!
So far I've only had hunger pangs which I ignore and then feel normal again.
I can't suggest anything helpful as I'm new to this. I suspect an underlying condition. Could you be pre-diabetic? (I say that because my mom is diabetic and has to eat at certain times)
And what's the group? I'd like to join.0 -
with fasting, i would suggest easing into it slowly.
your body has grown to expect food on a certain timetable.
but 8pm to 6am isn't fasting, that a normal time to not eat...
rather than asking your doc about fasting specifically,
ask why, even after a good dinner, you're feeling faint and sick at 6am.0 -
Your body obviously doesn't like being fasted so don't do it!!0

Your body is brilliant. Absolutely, incomprehensibly brilliant. Please listen to it.
Definitely.
^^^^^THIS!!
Our bodies are perfect, well oiled machines and you should definitely heed its warnings. Vomiting every day is a sign of a problem, listen to you body and solve it!0
