Hunger

Hi All
This is my second week using MFP. My weight has bee creeping up so I figure I better get rid of it now before I buy new clothes. My goal is simple: lose 5-7 pounds.
In the past all I had to do was cut back. Now that I'm counting cals (1200 a day for woman 5' 5") I find my self ravenous by mid-afternoon. Snack??? Oh yes. But a simple handful of raw mixed nuts or whatever just doesn't cut it. I get so hungry I could eat the chair I'm sitting on.
If the info helps, I lost 2 pounds last week but only half a pound this week.
Any help you can give would be very appreciated.

you only want to lose a few lbs so your weight loss goal should be set to 0.5lb per week.0 -
Focus on a high protein breakfast in the morning, protein will keep you full longer then carbs.
-- Veggie omelette
-- 2 slices of turkey bacon with egg whites on wheat toast
-- Eggs whites made with peppers and onions on wheat toast with a lean slice of ham
Add a piece of fruit to your high protein breakfast and you'll be golden. Also, drink A LOT of water. I noticed if I don't drink a lot of water I feel more hungry on those days so figures 8 glasses of water a day or more.0 -
Thanks for the tips. I guess my mornings with wheat chex and low fat milk wasn't such a good idea. I'll try the egg suggestion and look around for other proteins that are good early in the day.
This is going to make me rethink all my meals since I tend toward carbs in sandwiches, etc. Beans, veggies, tofu. Not going to be easy but I'm willing to try.0 -
Why should I keep my weekly goal so low? Am I being unrealistic?0

kudos to you madeleine for wanting to keep your shape at 62yo. I applaud you.
5-7lbs would be considered vanity weight in some respects?
Without wanting to sound disrespectful would it be more important to tone and do some weights or exercise or is the weight on the scale the most important thing?
There is a website hasfit.com where you can find loads of exercises to help tone etc.
If it is weight you want to lose then for such a small amount I would go with 0.5lb a week or even 0.25lbs.
Eat every couple of hours, small meals add a cup of water to drink in between each meal.
Divide your calories through the day and add your exercise calories to eat some or all of them also x0 -

The less you have to lose the slower it comes off. You probably should be eating more then 1200 calories. So if you bump up your goal to .5 a week you will be able to eat more.0 -
Chances are you're not eating enough especially if you're doing any type of exercise. Since you have so little to lose, you should be eating more then 1200 calories. I recommend calculating your TDEE and eating 10% less or at least reset your goals to lose 0.5lb weekly like another suggested.0

This isn't a vanity thing, losing 7 pounds. My clothes from last year are tight and I don't want to buy a whole new wardrobe just because I gained weight! I figure beat it now before it turns into even more weight.
I exercise: yoga twice a week, esp working core muscles and upper body - something a person my age needs. I' also garden and walk, etc
There are also the concerns of heart and joint health. I feel I need to stay trim just to live longer and feel healthier.
Thanks for your tips re: setting realistic goals. I adjusted down to losing 1 pound a week. That means 5 more weeks to lose pounds that were so easy to gain!! Thanks again for your advice.0 -
.5 pounds a week? Ummm. I don't know if I have the patience for that. I'm going to stick w a pound a week for now and see how things go. Thanks again, everyone, for your advice. This is a great forum.0
