New and looking for help w/ calories

New to MFP and looking to begin this journey. I once heard that its on average 10 calories per pound for a calorie deficient. Is that true? In example weighing 150 lbs a calorie deficient intake would be 1500 calories? Thanks!!

If you're new to MFP, then eat what it tells you to eat, and see how you're doing after a couple of weeks. For me, I use MFP as the accountability to myself is important. So many snacky treats can add up and derail progress.
  • 1200 calories it tells me...I'm not new to weight loss and 1200 I have always been told and believe I wayyyyy to low. Your body almost goes into starvation.

I am new as well. I am finding it hard to be under the recommended sugar intake, i usually come close to exceeding it my lunch time. I like to eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, does anyone have any suggestions as to which fruits and vegetables are lower on the glycemic index?

If you don't have a medical reason, don't worry about sugar, especially natural sugars like those in fruit. Keep it simple, hit your calories>protein>fat>carbs....... in that order. In the beginning just concentrate in hitting calorie goals. Then work on one macros at a time.....protein, then fats, then carbs..etc.

1200 is the default minimum that MFP will ever give you. Most of us need more than that and lose just fine on more than that. I bet you told the program you wanted to lose 2 lbs a week....right? Back that off to 1 a week...perfectly do-able and more calories. And yes...do eat most of your burned calories too.

Sugar is just a carb. As long as you're eating enough fats and protein, your carbs/sugar aren't important unless you have a medical issue that requires carbs/sugar to be monitored. As long as you're under your calorie goal, you'll lose weight. Some people find that sugar (even from fruit) causes them to have more sugar/carb cravings. If this isn't the case for you there's no need to limit sugar.
