Hey everyone,
I am getting married in November and need a bit of inspiration to get in shape. Any suggestions for at home exercise would be appreciated. I have a 5 1/2 month old so it's hard to leave the house to exercise regularly.

Hi and welcome! I absolutely swear by workout videos. It sounds lame, I know, but they are cheaper (and in my opinion, more fun) than a treadmill or stationery bike. Although if that works for you I know a lot of people do well with it, especially if they buy a favorite tv show on DVD and then only allow themselves to watch it while working out. If you hit Craisglist or yard sales, you can usually pick up a treadmill or something for a lot less.

Myself, I love Leslie Sansone's "walking" programs. They consist of pretty much 4 really basic moves so it's idiot-proof/klutz-proof (trust me, I've tested this!!) but she still makes it fun. Her bubbly, cheerful attitude grates on some people but I love it - she's a big goofball but really encouraging and I like that a lot. If you don't like her, there are TONS of other video instructors out there to pick from. If you go to CollageVideo.com they have clips of all their workouts so you can get a feel for them. You can also try a few from your local library to see what suits you.

Good luck, I'm sure you'll do great! Welcome to MFP - I took a little while to hit the message boards to but people are fabulous here. :) Feel free to add me as a buddy, I love sharing progress with others and supporting each other throughout the day.
  • I'm getting married in 23 days! I know you much be so excited.

The 30 Day Shred DVD. It's a great workout and really quick (only about 25 minutes from start to finish).

Do you have a Nintendo Wii? I've got WiiFit Plus and EA Sports Active. WiiFit is good for stretching and strength training, EA Sports Active is more of a cardio/circuit training workout. Plus you can do as much or as little as you want, depending on how much time/energy you have.

Congrats on the wedding and good luck losing!

I suggest walking or jogging if you can. Take the baby with you all children need some time outside! If it is really got just take a few short walks a day so you and baby are not out too long! Good luck

Get a resistance band, do leg lifts to tone your tummy, and you can do so many work outs with the resistance band!!! :)

There's a workout out there where you can use baby as a weight (LOL) http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art9571.asp. My baby is 16 months old now and he thinks it's so funny. The Slim in 6 series is pretty good and can step you up gradually and is a cardio/resistance training combo so it's a timesaver. Good luck and have fun.

All my work outs are at home:

I run intervals 3x/week (the specific days vary depending on my work schedule because I run in the morning) - intervals meaning I alternate walking and running/jogging.

I own 3 pairs of dumbbells. 5 lb, 8 lb, and 10 lbs. I use all 3 sets for strength training. I find exercises on self.com and shape.com. I do this usually 3x/week and then take a brisk walk afterwards.

I also do the Ab Ripper X video (part of P90X but this video is only like 17 minutes and WORKS you good!!) and I have a beginner's Pilates video I do right after, followed by a brisk walk.

I work out 6 days/week and rest usually Sunday or Monday.

Hey there! Congrats on your upcoming wedding!

If at all possible, maybe your significant other could watch your little one while you get out of the house for a bit for a nice jog or walk. It may also help ease the stresses that come with wedding planning.

If thats not an option, you could always try some at-home DVDs. My personal favorites are the Turbo Jam dvds, its a mix of kickboxing with some good music and some fun moves. But, only if that kind of thing interests you. I've heard Insanity is a great workout as well.

Jump ropes are good. Squats, lunges, pushups, jumping jacks, high knees are all good. Running stairs is a good one. Sometimes some of the best exercises are put together by yourself. Put on some rockin music that you like and get your workout on!

One thing of advice from personal experience that I would give you is to make sure to eat properly. I know when I was getting ready for my wedding I was 160 pounds and wanted to lose 10 pounds. I basically was so obsessed that I tried really limiting my food intake to somewhat of an extreme. That did NOT work, and within the 4 months I did not lose a single pound. So, I thought I was eternally stuck at 160 forever. (I'm about 5'7") However, this time around I'm eating enough and good, clean foods-- and I am down to 152, and I'm still losing. And I honestly believe its because I am eating enough foods, and the kind of foods that will sustain and improve my health. A lot of people say that the majority of losing weight (up to 90% of losing weight) is food...and they are correct. Exercise is awesome, and I highly recommend that. But, you will see so much more success if you combine your exercise with proper eating! Good luck and how fun!!!!!!

I bought the ebook Buff Brides this week. It gives you a 6 month or 3 month (I think) strength routine that you can do at home - each one is supposed to take an hour. I would run/walk as cardio or do a DVD on your cardio days.

Just like marybethbeech, I am getting married in 22 days (the day before her) and I am also doing the 30-day shred! It's an awesome workout and takes so little time. I'm also doing strength training 3x a week with 5-10 lb dumbbells. I also take a 90 minute hot yoga class 3x a week, but that's probably not an easy option for you. I agree with the others who have said workout videos at home. Taebo is another great one, makes you feel so powerful and strong. Good luck and congrats on your upcoming wedding!!

WOW...who knew there were so many of us brides to be! I'm not getting married until April, but am, of course, looking to shed some weight. I think everyone's suggestions sound great, and don't really have any more to add. But, I think the idea of using the baby as a weight is freakin' hilarious!!!
