I have an iPhone and use run keeper. You can choose different activities such as walking, hiking, running etc. it keeps track of distance and time. I haven't searched apps recently but what I do once in awhile is search for free apps for running-the last one I found was virtual trainer but haven't checked it out yet as I am really happy with run keeper. You didn't mention what kind of phone you have-but what I do is download the one that has the most positive reviews. I'm constantly amazed by what awesome apps become available to enhance my life!

I also use Runkeeper. It's the most handy app on my phone.

    I use runtastic
  • I just note the start time and walk around Halifax, NS on various routes at a pace that will challenge me, then note the end time. When I get back home, I plot it on Google maps and do the math to determine the average speed.

For those who have not tried Nordic walking (with trekking poles), I highly recommend it. It allows me to step out my pace, use more of my body, and helps to take some load off my arthritic hip. Some sites say that it burns up to 40% more calories.

Time your walk that you do. Get Google Earth for free and use the distance tool to map your route. Tells you how far you went.

I use MOVES for iPhone app as a pedometer too.
