The best food is the food that you enjoy eating that still fits within your calories and nutrient guidelines. So the best food right now, might be a couple of eggs, a glass of milk, an orange, and yes some bacon or half an avocado. Later in the day it may be a sirloin steak, some broccoli, a sweet potato, and then a couple of scoops of ice cream. Tonight it could be chicken breasts, brussels sprouts, a small side of pasta with tomato sauce, or it may be a slice of pizza and a glass of milk. The point is, it depends. There is no perfect food, eat any one thing and you will lack some essential nutrients. It's the combination of foods, your overall diet, that you should look at.

It works for me. I like tomato and clam sauces for the nutrition content and, of course, taste.

    This^^

I'm also partial to whole foods and processing (cooking) my own foods from raw, whole ingredients. Not that I'm totally 100% "clean" but I try to be most of the time. IMHO, it really makes weight loss and now maintenance that much easier.

^^ And I agree with this. I have nothing against the "clean" thing unless it pushes someone into obsessing about it to the point of causing binges or not getting enough calories or nutrition. I also think a lot of very good foods get a bum rap because they don't fit someone's definition of "clean." Canned tomatoes and pasta sauces immediately come to mind.

Oh, and OP, thank you. You're very kind.

totally agree with you, though the point about pasta sauces and canned foods is that the ingredients can vary dramatically from brand to brand.

EDIT: though when you're starting at this from scratch, that's probably not worth worrying about.

There is not one accepted definition of "clean." Without being critical one way or the other, it's basically unprocessed food in it's natural state. The problem often comes in the definition of "processed." Some people will take this to an extreme as even cooking could be considered processing and most grains are milled or otherwise processed in some way before you buy them at the store. Milk is often pasteurized by law in many countries, and canning is also processing. You will see some people say "don't eat food that comes in a box," or "shop around the parameter of the grocery store (as in the U.S. that's where fresh foods are usually stocked). I don't want to get in this debate, but I will say find a combination of foods that you enjoy that fit within your calorie requirements and provide sufficient nutrition.

essentially in nutrition, "clean" foods are considered unprocessed whole foods like meat, vegetables, fruits, nuts, eggs and seeds. Nothing that comes from a box, can, package, wrapper, etc. the categories that people fight about include dairy and grains.

this is unnecessarily complicated for you if you're just starting out. if you want to do the research and learn about this stuff, go for it, but if not, the first thing you should worry about is simply meeting your caloric goals. one step at a time. :)
