A way of life or obesession

As I was packing to go camping this morning a fleeting thought crossed my mind, I wanted to take the scales. Now that's getting a little obsessive. I was telling my darling husband this and he said "well honey, it is ALL you talk about." He didn't say it mean and he also said "but you're doing great!". So how does this just become a piece of one's life rather than your whole life?

one of my best friends told me once and she said it alot better than i'm about too. when you live at one extreame for such a long time, and try to change its natural to swing to the other extreame for a little while, but after awhile you'll settle into the middle. For your goals it looks like your getting some where and its hard not to obess over it when you know how easy it is to fall back. Try and set some healthy boundries for yourself just like you do with food and stick too them, when you get to your final goal, and go to maintance mood then conentrate on setting down into the middle. Just my thoughts anyway, i'm no expert.0

That makes sense. I am afraid of backsliding because that is what I've always done. Lose 10, gain 12, lose 20, gain 25, lose 30, gain 35...neverending cycle. I just feel like I have to break this cycle for my health.0

The way your friend looked at it is a great way to view it...............I think when your first making changes it is hard not to obsess over things a little bit because you are in the learning process.
After a while when you have learned a lot about eating and your body, you settle in a groove because you know what to do so it gets easier...........
I tend to obsess a lot still because I am finding I have food intolerances to foods I absolutely LOVE...........brocolli, cauliflower, cabbage,0 -
Like you I always use my food scale and get nervous when I can't (unless calories and portions are provided to me before hand). Its a way for me to make sure I am eating what I should and not going over--even doing this for months I still can't eyeball the correct poritons--my eyes are hungier than my tummy!
I am going camping in the begining of august and plan on bringing my food scale with me0 -
Thanks guys! I do know that I SPEND way too much time on MFP but I love it and it keeps me accountable to myself. I need to just set two times a day to sign on here and enter my exercise and food and then a time to catch up on posts.0

My dad tried to tell me I sounded obsessive the other day. My response was that I have a goal to reach and there is no other way to reach a goal than to be diligent and and make it a priority in life. I would have thought he woul be nicer considering he has been teasing me about being chunky for the past 2 years...
Regardless, my "obsession" is paying off!0 -

Exactly right! My dad does the same thing to me...it doesn't help that his other two daugthers are 5'8 and 5'9 and look like bean poles and I'm the 5'1 shorty.0 -
Why not weigh, portion, and prepack everything before you go? Be glad it's camping and not a vacation that involves restaurants! Just remember that you will also be doing a lot of exercise (walking, swimming, hiking, swimming, playing) so be sure you eat enough. This is the perfect weather for fruit too. Arm yourself with good choices just like at home. I'm sure you'll do great.0

I agree that this is part of the learning process. We're not just trying to lose weight for the short-term; we want to be making changes that will allow us to sustain our weight loss and fitness for the rest of our lives! If it's going to be a lifelong thing, I'm going to be making it a priority--reflecting on every detail, weighing my choices, paying attention to my body--it's a huge learning curve. I don't think I will ever "arrive" fully. But it's worth working toward every day.
I try to be mindful of my DH's sanity, and try not to talk about this journey all the time. I'll still mention it a few times a day...some discovery I've made, a mini-goal I've reached...or if he asks me if I want a dessert, I might tell him I've already hit my calories for the day, etc. He's proud of the progress I've made so far, and he wants me to be happy with myself, so he understands that this is all part of the process.0
