New to the community!! I just got done browsing around profile's and message boards, and let me just say you guys look awesome!! So it's been 3 years since I've been very active (working out intensely daily). I've had 2 kids in that time period and I work as a orthodontist assistant so I am on my tush all day. One day I decided life is not worth it to sit around, so I decided to go for law enforcement. Now it's time for me to get back in shape and I have 3 months until I have to take a physical assessment for law enforcement. Since I have kids, working out at home is my best option. I've been trying Jillian's work out on youtube and they are GREAT! I'm want to buy them but don't know which would be the best. Which would be a great cardiac workout and muscle building workout? And would yoga benefit?? Thanks all for the help :) I would really appreciate it.

I can't answer your question but wanted to say " good for you" for taking life by the horns. Best of luck to you.

I love JM's Body Revolution. 90 day program and it's excellent....in my opinion (just completed my 2nd round of it). She also has the Yoga Meltdown among so many others, like her Kick Boxing one. Good luck with which ever you choose!

I've done 30 Day Shred. It's a 4 week program and is pretty good as far as Jillian DVD's go. She can be a bit annoying, but overall she does have some good ideas for at home workouts. All you need is some light weights. It's a good starting point.
  • Good for you!! I started with 30 day shred because it's a shorter workout. I have also done 6 week 6 pack, No More Trouble Zones, and Banish Fat, Boost Metabolism. All of them are great! I really like No More Trouble Zones, but it (and Banish Fat, Boost Metabolism) are longer workouts...about 45 minutes. 6 Week 6 Pack is a loooong commitment, but I did all of level one and over half of level 2 and my body TRANSFORMED. I have pictures on my profile. All of my recent weight loss has been courtesy of Jillian. She is amazing and great motivation! Really, anything you do will be great and you will see amazing results if you stick with it!! Add me if you like and good luck!!

What is your physical assessment going to consist of? If it is anything like the ones I have seen forget Jillian and start running/weight training. No offence to Jillian she has helped a ton of people, but its just not targeting what you are going for.

The requirements here consist of running 1.5 miles in 12 minutes (that's an 8 minute mile which is challenging for many people) and an obstacle course that also requires you push/pull/carry a certain amount of weight that just isn't going to be addressed in Jillian's workouts.

I would be looking at a workout that specifically replicated the type of testing I was going to do, running, jumping, stairs, pushups, etc.

    Good luck.

Here in FL we have to pass an obstacle course in 6 minutes. Since I have kids though I was wondering what I could do at home. Maybe I could do home work outs for one month, then upgrade to the gym?

    What does the course include?
Again, thinking back to what i know, the first thing that comes to mind is my local track. There is a playground for kids and an infield, plus bleachers. Let your kids play while you run laps, run up the bleachers, do pushups, sit-ups, etc.
A lot of the workouts we used to do were run a lap of the gym (it was winter so it was small gym) plus 10 pushups x4, lap plus 20 sit-ups x4, lap plus 10 burpees x4., etc. You could do lengths of a field. Get creative. What is required in your obstacle course? It may sound easy to jump a 3' obstacle, get down on the ground and back up but its hard.

ETA - does the agency you are applying for have recommendations or do other agencies who have the same test have some?

If you really can't do anything else, than Jillian DVDs are definitely better than nothing. I'm just trying to give feedback that would be the best course of action

I've done Jillian in the past and I just started her again and I noticed in the past she really helped with endurance which will help with your fit test.
I'm doing banish fat boost metabolism

    Obsticle course:
    Climb over a 40” w
    all.
    Run 10’
    Jump over 3 hurdles (24”, 12”, 18”) spaced 5’ apart
Run 10’ and enter the serpentine
Run in a serpentine manner through 9 pylons placed in a single row, 5’ apart.
Run 10’ toward the low crawl.
Drop to the ground and crawl 8’ under a 27” open-air barrier.
Drop the baton beside the last low-crawl pylon.
    (I copied and pasted)
Also a 220 yard run to get to the obstacle and dragging a 150 lbs dummy.
I'm pretty good in lifting weights. My only concern is running...I can run very fast but not for a long time.
I live in sort of a country area, so the only running tracks is the high school. But that is a very good idea (bleachers, etc.)

I was googling physical tests for Florida and saw that one. Totally different than what I've seen. I would google some more and see if anyone online offers suggestions on how to train. Is there anyone you can talk to that has done it?
Fortunately for you it doesn't seem like a whole lot of running.

Is there anywhere you can practice first to see where you are weak? Do you have more than one option to pass the test?

I've looked up training for law enforcement on google and basically it's squats, push ups and sit ups. I can't practice the course or even peek around to see what they do (I've called to see if I could). When I tried Jillian's workout I was pleased so I wanted to know which ones were the best. Im thinking to just so these until I'm conditioned and than start intensifying (weight lifting, laps, etc.)

I presume once you start your new job, you will need child care. Can you organise that for now so you can get out to train.
