Not far from me, I'm in the Poconos. The second word is pronounced as "Barry" not "Bar". (Just in case anyone was wondering).

While it is widely accepted to pronounce it as the previous poster described, the actual phonetic pronounciation is 'Wilksbarray' with the emphasis on the first syllable.

The town was named after John Wilkes and Isaac Barré [pronounced Bah-RAY], who were early American politicians. Barré was particularly important in repealing the Stamp Act.

I'm not from the area, I just know a lot about history. I did happen to go to university in Pennsylvania and am particularly familiar with the state's politics.

Have you ever been to Buffalo, NY? I imagine Wilkes-Barre is the same way. Close enough to a major metropolitan area that is a lot of fun [Toronto, Philly, respectively]. The cities themselves have maybe an Applebees and a Dave and Busters. Seems like as good a place for a person to kill him or herself, but nowhere I'd want to visit looking for 'fun.'
