Serving size help

Is there a website out there to figure out portion sizes for recipes? For example, I just entered in all the info for a taco salad recipe I make. I entered it as 6 servings. I will probably end up taking my 1 cup measuring cup and scooping it all out to see how many cups there are to figure out my portion size. But, I was thinking, there has to be a website that calculates that for you! Anyone know?

I would love to input my recipe and then it pops up as 6, 1 cup servings!

i always guesstimate how many people does it serve, what size are the portions , and would i count a "serving" as one portion 2 or more?

for example, i make soup in my crockpot
its a 7 quart crock pot, 28 cups...
so , i add the recipe ingredients in , and divide it by 28 servings , then a serving is 1 cup :D

I think I'm pretty good at guessing, but was hoping there was a better way!

Check out WebMD - portion size plate. They give you a food and what the correct portion size should be based on an object. For example: a small baked potato = the size of a computer mouse. A serving of deli meli = the size of a CD, 3 oz of fish = size of checkbook. 1/4 almonds = size of a golf ball.

Do you have a food scale?

First I enter it as a recipe in the My Recipes section. This gives me the totals for all the macros. Let's pretend that this recipe adds up to be 1500 calories (totally arbitrary number just for the purpose of an example).

I take the bowl before it has food in it and record it's weight. Then when everything is in there I put the bowl with food back on the scale. Then I can play around with the division based on how many calories I want for the meal.

Like if it's a taco salad lunch I might only want 300 calories. If the food weight is 500 grams, I would take one fifth of it out, spooning out onto my plate until it reads 100 grams food weight. (500 divided by 5) ( I use the TARE feature on my digital scale which accounts for the weight of the bowl).

If it's dinner I might want more calories like 500. If the food weight is 500 grams, I would take out one third of it, spooning it out of the food bowl onto my plate until the grams got to 166.66. (500 divided by 3)

God, that was hard to explain, but that's how I do it!

Maybe I need a better food scale. I've tried to weigh ALL the food before, but it won't go up that high usually. Thank you for the reply!

It's not an exact science. OK, well it IS an exact science, but you don't have to make it one.

If I make a recipe, I'll eyeball it, estimate it .. we feed the family (4) and have 2 plates of leftovers .. 6 servings.

sometimes I'll go the other way .. I'll mess with the # of servings until the numbers look like numbers I want, then portion out the recipe.

It's just a ballpark .. close enough is good enough.

If I read the last sentence correctly, in the recipe name you can say Taco Salad servs 6 -1 cup servings. Also where it asks how many servings just put 6, once you measure out your recipe using 1 cup measurements and are satisfied that is what you want a serving to be.

It would be nice if there was a feature to show how many ounces per serving in the recipes section!

But, I will usually eyeball or have an idea of how big or small of a meal I want and divide the recipe that way. For instance, I made up some ranch dressing (greek yogurt, skim milk, light mayo, seasoning) and to get calorie count I added up the ingredients in ounces, divided by 2 for a two ounce serving and got the number of servings per batch that way.
