MFP'S EXERCISE VALUES A BIT HIGH

Has anyone found that MFP's exercise values are a little high? For instance, when I enter "elliptical trainer" and MFP gives me the calories burned, it is higher than what the elliptical display at the gym is showing. I am using the lesser number for calories burned just to be safe.

Has anyone else noticed this?

I have noticed that too! I add less just to be sure... would rather under value my exercise than over value it! :)

Yes, I've noticed that too, especially since I got a heart rate monitor. I definitely wasn't burning as many calories as I hoped.

Many people have noticed this. I personally just don't eat back all of my exercise calories. I am still losing so it must be working

I just use the tdee method with my work out calories factored in and log my own exercise as 1 calorie burned. if I see a big number like -250 calories I will want to eat them back and with that I'm not supposed to. where if I do -1 calorie I say good enough and call it a day.

Note that MFP, your HRM AND the equipment at the gym will NOT give you an accurate reading of your burn rate. An HRM could help you a bit more because it gives you your heart rate throughout the workout and based on your HR will give you calories burned.

BUT ALL of the above do NOT account for one's Body Composition. Muscle burns more than fat, so let's say for example...We put a ripped person on an elliptical and put someone else with a higher-than-desired BF%/or less muscle tone on the elliptical beside the muscular individual. We leave the HRM out of the equation in this scenario, and have them do the same workout at the same rate, speed and all. Machine will show close to, if not the same number of calories burned but is this really true?

Point being here only YOU know approximately how much you're burning - a readout will only give you calories based on ONE variable and nothing more

A bit high? Too high. I've never gone off those numbers. When I use my HRM and compare it to the numbers MFP spits out for exercise...MFP overestimates drastically. It is not taking into account your weight, height, age, average hr, gender, etc.
