Can you use all purpose flour instead of flour?

It's all in the title: my mother asked me to make her some lower calorie chocolate muffins, and the only recipes I have found require oats which I don't have - obviously -. So would the substitution work D:?

Yes, because it's all purpose flour. It works for anything.

Not to be nit-picky, but your title asks if you can use all purpose flour instead of flour.. And yes would be the answer.

But I am assuming you really want to know if you can use flour instead of oats and I am sure that depends on what you are making, but I am not sure it would be wise. Flour and oats are 2 completely different ingredients, have different properties, and textures.

Substituting flour for oats will give a very different texture. I wouldn't recommend it for most recipes.
  • In my experience, similar quantities of flour and oats will have vastly different liquid-holding properties.

I'd say you would have to use more flour, and be careful not to overmix. Your muffins would not end up the way that they're supposed to still, and you'd lose the benefits of whole grains.

I think your best bet here is to go buy her some low cal muffins....
  • When baking the type of flour can definitely affect the end product. Other ingredients and even small things such as the temperature of the eggs, temperature of the butter, and very small changes can make an enormous effect. Baking, unlike cooking, is much more of an exact science ( ask any baker). That being said if you are not picky, use the flour that you want.

    This.

I've used it instead of motor oil in my car and I've used it instead of laundry detergent. It's really the only thing I buy at the store anymore.
  • All purpose flour is obviously flour.

I used it to regrout the tile in my bathroom the other day. Worked like a charm.

The oats are probably quite important to the low-calorie bit of that recipe.

    Use mini muffin cases.

That'll get them lower calorie without much hassle. And it's the first couple of bites that are the best.

Muffins are essentially, cake for breakfast.
