Running is good cardio. I would check with your doc or a fitness professional though to find out what the best start would be for you. I cant see a pic but since you asked if you were too heavy, I would assume you think you are overweight? So definitely start with a doctor to make sure running or any other program would be safe and helpful. Good luck!

do whatever you like, whatever you can tolerate, and whatever you will stick to. If it hurts modify it if you can't do it change it up. Not a big deal and whatever you find that you like stick with it.

  • Hi OP, I don't know where you live but in the UK community gyms normally give you access to a personal trainer for 1 free session if you start at the gym. I didn't do that though. When I started I found a group that used the local church hall, I staked it out and there were a few fellow wobblers so I went in. I did that for about 2 months and got a bit of my confidence up with exercise and then I joined the gym.

I found underwear to be the most important part of exercise... I like to be strapped down in all areas and if i'm not then I start to feel very conscious of myself and uncomfortable!!!!

Running does not work for me, it knackers my knees but the cross trainer or eliptical is very good for that.
Also DVD's at home (lots of people talk about them on here) are a good starting point too.

Sex is also a good work out but only if it's the 'serious work out' kind... not if it's the' married and we haven't done it in a few weeks so we should' kind!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any movement is better than no movement though hun... even if you're moving slowly you are still moving quicker than the person still on the sofa!!!!!!!!!!

    Good luck xx

Just get active any way that you'll stick to. That's the secret. Anything you'll take up for a week and then end up hating will not get you where you need to be.

Then the other side of the equation is food. Eat at a sensible deficit (TDEE - 20%) and stick with it, be consistent and above all be patient.

Time + Consistency = Success. That's all there is to it. Everything else is fluff designed by the fitness industry to sell you *kitten*.....

QFT. Walking is great exercise, look up Couch to 5K if you fancy starting running.

Oh and yes nookie is great exercise too

^This. I just started with swimming as it is low impact and some weights. Now I do all kinds of stuff because as i've gotten fitter I've enjoyed exercise and sports more.

Start with walking to build up your stamina then light jogging. I'm thinking of doing the couch to 5k to get me started. Good luck.
  • Being a lesbian has nothing to do with wanting to lose weight. Any sexual preference is fine but losing weight is a universal thing. It does not discriminate on sexual preference, religion, race or anything. You just need to start logging on your food, exercise and monitor your weight. It does get better. You will have to give up some things you love - I did like wine!!!

You can do this. Don't let anyone get you down.

    lift heavy weights
eat less than you burn off
make sure you're getting enough protein and healthy fat, the rest of your calories can come from carbs

the thread "in place of a road map" gives step by step instructions for how to calculate how much you're burning off and how much less to eat.

I've had pretty good results with just restricting my calories and using the upright exercise bike + weight machines (I know, I know - I'm switching to free weights on Monday) three times a week. I started out a little heavier than your starting weight, and am almost to my initial goals after just 4-5 months. All it takes is keeping at it, at least in my experience.

As an aside, I really like the Expresso stationary bikes. They have a video-game engine that renders a road course with other cyclists as you're exercising, and include steering and gear-shifting as inputs, so they keep you from getting bored with the grind. If you have them available to you at your local gym, it might be worth a try.

Anything weill help, even going out and doing some walking (maybe 2-4 miles) a day can help, that's how I started and I was at 295. Now I hit the gym hard (cardio, then weight lifting, then more cardio - and I run/jog when I have the energy).

Heck, I even play a few games on my Xbox 360 - anything that gets you up and wiggling will work.

^^^yup. This. Anything you'll stick to is the best exercise be it walking or shadow boxing. Just keep to your MFP goals and you'll get right where you want and need to be. :flowerforyou:

Pick something you think would be fun to try. And of course check with your doc, to make sure it's ok. I started with Richard Simmons' DVD's cuz it was more like dancing than "work". Then moved onto the Biggest Loser Cardio Max DVD's, when the low impact stuff got boring and wasn't difficult anymore. Then I tried Jillian Michael's stuff (Ripped in 30 and 30DS). Now I'm doing Billy Blanks' Tae Bo. LOVE THEM ALL! DVD's are pretty inexpensive and I like the privacy of my own home. I have quite a collection of DVD's now, so I can switch around a lot and not get bored. I also love Bob Harper's Yoga for the Warrior! Great for toning!!!
    Take care and HAVE FUN!!

p.s. - don't forget to eat your protein when working out!!!

    hi and welcome.

Congrats on making the first step. I would just recommend to eat well and move more. If running is your thing, go for it. It theres other activities, try them. Do whichever activity you like doing because if you force yourself you won't do it for long and its counter productive. Just make sure to eat properly along with the workouts to fuel yourself. You don't wanna eat too much nor too little. Check out this thread which helps you figure out how much to eat

Watching what you eat is a given, but how about volunteering at your local animal shelter? Take a dog out for a walk. You are not only exercising but helping a good cause. Besides, dogs are good conversation starters with cute strangers ;)

I'm a heterosexual male, although I've never taken any pride in either my sexuality or gender. I've never been proud of my weight, either. I do take pride in my professional and personal accomplishments , however. And I'm proud of my family.

Good luck on whatever your goals are. "Thin and whatever that word is" seems like a vague goal; I'd suggest being more specific. I think that any exercise would be good for you, but your weight loss will start in the kitchen.

^ I agree with this, but the road map has been hijacked and is quickly losing its relevance. Add lifting weights to your routine to maintain lean body mass.

Good post and I know its (probably) not what you're trying to say but it almost sounds like you're saying that lifting heavy weights is very important when its not. Many folks don't like lifting weights and when people on this site keep singing the "lift heavy weights" song it can get discouraging to them :flowerforyou:
