Hey all! I find a big problem I have is needing more to feel full so does anyone out there know anything that's filling but not too damaging? Even snacks since I need to eat in bits throughout the day for my diabetes.

Protein is the most satiating macro and has less of an insulin response and impact on glucose levels than carbs. Things like protein shakes, jerky, yogurt, and egg whites are very high in protein.

Fats have no impact on insulin/glucose and are more satiating than carbs, but less satiating than protein. Good sources of fats include nuts/nut butters, avocado, cooking oils like coconut oil and olive oil, and seeds like chia and flax.

Carbs are the least satiating and have the most impact on glucose/insulin. Fiber slows the digestion of carbs. Since you're a diabetic, you should aim for more complex carbs like oatmeal, fibrous vegetables (think leafy and/or green), moderate quantities of whole grains, high fiber fruits like raspberries, and low sugar fruits like strawberries.

    Hope this helps. Good luck.

Lentils do it for me every time. I love curried lentils with spinach, and whenever I eat it, I feel full for hours and hours.

As far as snacks, I like dense veggies like broccoli. I will definitely fill up on that before it can do too much damage. A hard boiled egg works well too, or a small piece of cheese.

I'm with justsomerandomgirl on the protein thing.

Ha! was just going to write the same thing as the poster above....

    hard boiled eggs (no salt)
    lentil soup
    split pea soup
apples - spikes your blood sugar though
    oatmeal
light laughing cow cheese wedge with 2 stalks of celery (spread the cheese thin - it has lots of flavor)

I've cut up a whole head of cauliflower and munched on it raw throughout the day. Surprisingly good.

High fiber fruits and veggies. I LOVE berries, especially blackberries and raspberries. They are chalkful of fiber, taste delicious. and full of antioxitants. My favorite thing to do is the get a bowl full of frozen blackberries and raspberries and put powered sugar them. It really satisfies a sweet tooth

I tried something new yesterday and really loved it. Keep in mind, I LOVE cold smoked salmon. Used to eat it on bagels as often as I could justify the expense.

Anywho, I took 2oz of sliced, cold smoked salmon (100 Cals) and spread each slice with ripe avocado. Used a bit less than 1/4 of an avocado (~60 Cals). Rolled up the slices and ate. Man, it was good. The avocado smoothed out the salty taste of the salmon, and the salt in the salmon made the avocado taste great. I felt comfortably full for hours.

And the sodium wasn't that bad - 650mg. I'm always well under on sodium and only add salt to anything once in a blue moon so a higher sodium snack now and again, not a big deal.

Try putting some chicken breast, black beans, tomatoes, peppers and a small can of corn into a pot (I use my slow cooker) and let stew and stew...have this alone, or maybe over some jasmine rice (or whatever is on your approved foods list for starch maybe potato or whatever.) It is something that will definitely keep you going and is super low calorie. Add me if you like and we can help to keep one another accountable for eating right! I've got exact measurements (and macros) in my recipes if you need them let me know.
