i am started to get interested in eating better meats aka, no antibiotics, hormones etc... this is completely new to me.. all of this time we have been buying our meat from walmart because it is the cheapest for the most... but there chicken has been looking a little grey lately, the steaks are so tuff we throw them out everytime, most of the meats packaging is broken so there is blood all over the products (EW).. i could go on and on not to mention the rotted produce... ( sorry for the rant) anyways, i watched a few things on netflix about organic meats... although we can't afford chicken at 10$ a pound... or steaks at 17$ a pound as i found at an organic butcher shop... point is... has anyone made the swtich from walmart type meat, to all natural non injected, no hormone etc meat and noticed a difference?
i just bought some yesterday but am curious of others opinions. the butcher at this grocery store told me that walmart doesnt cut there own meat or inspect it. it gets shipped in from wherever and they just put it on the shelf without looking at it... this place gets it fresh and personally checks each piece, cuts it all and packages it themselves... sounds better already :0)

I have started purely grass fed, no antibiotic, etc etc meats because I'm in the middle of the Whole30 challenge.

I would buy them here and there before, but because I'm doing Whole30 it's a "requirement" or "preferred" I should say to test whether or not you will see a difference eating purely natural foods without all this crap in it.

Honestly I don't necessarily -feel- a difference yet, but I see the difference in the cuts of meat as you say and knowing what's NOT in there makes me feel 50x already, you know? But then again I'm only 17 days into the food challenge.

I also need to learn a lot about beef and other cuts of meat. Before this I would bascially eat just chicken breast and turkey, so I'm still in education mode too :) I hope you find it worth it, I really feel it is.

We used to raise beef cattle and I can't eat store bought meat. I by a quarter of beef from a cousin who is still in the business. It's not organic but he raises cattle the same way we did, grows his own feed and only uses medications if the animal is sick. I'm not sure if we're healthier but it sure tastes better.

Depending where you live you may be able to find a farmer who sells off the farm or a butcher shop that knows the source of their meat and will sell you quantity.
  • I eat natural hormone-free chicken, but not free range or organic. I can usually get whole chickens for $.89/lb on sale, or boneless skinless breasts for $3.50/lb on sale. Our dogs eat the whole chickens, so whatever parts I want from them, I'll cut off and use for us, and the doggies get the rest.

Beef - only grass fed. As a result, we rarely eat beef because $18/lb isn't really worth it very often.

We buy only organic, grass-fed, no hormone, etc. etc. etc. meats. While I don't necessarily recognize a difference in how I'm feeling physically, it does help to know that we are eating the best we can.

I've gotten a lot of beef through a friend who bought half a beef. It's word of mouth, really, the way you find these opportunities. If you live in or near a rural area, I'd start going to some of the farm stores and asking the people who work there if they know anyone who raises meat.

Another option is to try natural grocers like Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, etc. in your area and see what they carry and for how much. Costco sells a big pack of good boneless skinless chicken breasts that I feel fine buying.

It's definitely not cheap, but we've lowered our meat intake as a result, so we're saving more money, which we in turn use to buy the "good stuff". Good luck to you!
  • thank you for your replies, i dont think there will be a physical difference, im thinking more a difference in the texture, taste of the meat itself... i just went to a butcher a few days ago and holy cow was it expensive, about $18/lb for beef and almost 9$/lb for chicken! so i went to just an average grocery store other than walmart, and talked to the butchers there, they check and package theyre own meat etc. and i was able to find all natural which is not organic but it said no antibiotics/hormones... havent had the chicken yet but the ribeye steaks were WAAAYYY better, they were actually edible compared to other places where it is so tuff you can't eat it. so i probably wont go organic due to super high cost, but im happy to know that my meat it actually somewhat fresh and edible i guess :0)
