does anyone know where to find out how many calories you burn while you do strength training?

From my understanding there is no way to accurately estimate calories burned while strength training. Sorry. This is why some people like to eat at TDEE-20%, because it takes into account the amount of exercise you do in an average week and as such you don't eat exercise calories back.

forgive my ignorance, but what does TDEE-20% mean?

I'm not an expert. TDEE is Total Daily Energy Expenditure. Measured in calories. Otherwise known as maintenance calorie amount. Mine is around 3000 to 3500 calories. Subtract 20 percent to get an amount you should eat to lose weight at a healthy rate. I have heard that weight training does not burn many calories.

it depends. the more you can lift, the more calories you can burn. Seeing as the extreme vast majority of the population is untrained or beginner, then they don't burn very much. once you start lifting heavy, then you can indeed get some decent calorie burns going. It's a common issue for any heavy lifter looking to gain weight to have to eat far more food than one would think when lifting is their only exercise.
  • It's listed as strength training under the cardio exercises on MFP.

^^^ THIS^^^ or you can also work out your TDEE - 20 % by using the spreadsheet created by a fellow MFP'er Heybales on the following link
