I messed up

I've been on mfp for about 26 days now. I've been an avid exerciser for about 13 years now so that wasn't the problem. I've been looking at people's posts trying to figure out how they've been successful on here losing weight. I think I went too gung ho in the beginning on my weight lost journey. Most days I've not been hitting the magical 1200 and my net cals have sometimes been in the negative ( didn't realize that was the number I was suppose to be looking at...oops). Anyways the last two days have been a dieters nightmare. I can't get a hold on my eating. I think my body I trying to get out of starvation mode.

So today's a new day I'm going to try and eat ALOT more since ill probably burn 500-600 cals just exercising. I'm nervous. I know eat. Eat. Eat. Is what everybody will say. I need some encouragement. Please help! Tell me I'm doing the right thing.

Yes you have to eat to your goal, and eat those exercise cals that you earned! You'll have a lot of ppl telling you that 1200 is too low but netting 1200 (note I ate exercise cals back) worked for me!

You are DEFINITELY doing the right thing. Please listen to me as I speak from experience.

I starved myself, pretty much. 500 calories a day net, probably less. Sure, I lost weight to begin with. But then it stopped, I was hungry all the time, I felt like absolute rubbish and couldn't do the exercise and worst of all, I ended up binging on stuff. I'd have one good day and then a bad day and repeat the cycle for about three months. It completely destroyed my view about food for three years and every diet I tried afterwards happened the same way.

Now - I eat clean, I work out, I make sure I don't deny myself anything and as a result, I've lost nearly 50lbs since January. The more you deny yourself, the more you will want it!

Good luck, feel free to add me if you want to chat x

Hi Kara, the first thing you need to do is realize falling down is all part of the thing we call life. And how you get back up is what we call living... With that said, do what you gotta to do to reset your body and as you said, you know what to do to get back on the wagon again. Never forget that good health is a journey, it's not a destination. There's no "THERE" where you can stop when you arrive. Know your body, take care of your body, and you will be alright.

Two days does not constitute messing up.

Think big picture - weeks, months, years.

Take a look at this link to get a nice overview of how to approach this:

  • fluffy chicken has excellent advice. it is a journey for sure. I've been on 10 days and not doing too good, but i see the pattern, every other day i do good, then bad then good. Ok, now I need to do something with that FACT, And also, though I am see-sawing, the trend is a downward curve.... this isn't easy, but WE can do it. Better choices is it. And eating when you are tired? That is the dreadful time from 9-11 pm. I'm trying to just go to bed earlier, but habbits are not easy to break, are they?

Don't be afraid to mess up. It's how you learn and grow! Lord knows I'm not doing the same thing I was doing when I started. When you think of this as a lifestyle change, not a diet, you see things in a new light. I don't do anything now that I can't keep up with for the long haul, so you need to figure out what that is for you. Even if it means a slower weight loss journey. By doing this, you'll be more apt to keep with it and keep off the weight you lose. :)

I think many of us have fallen in the same trap:wink: I came and started logging month and a half ago, set up my goals and put 1.5lb a week. Also started walking nearly every day (from barely moving before that). Weight was dropping like magic but after a month I was getting cranky, obsessed, easily exhausted... I've increased my calories with 200 and if all goes well hope to increase with another 100-200 in a month. It's great having more food. Still early days but I'm still on track with the weight loss, just a bit slower! It's hard to increase though, it nearly killed me, the guilt was awful :frown:

Zig Ziegler once said "if you aim at nothing, you will hit it every time"'. It is imperative to know the basic physiology of weight loss. Too many people blindly follow a 1200 calorie diet because "MFP SAID SO" when that is not the healthy number of calories for them. You must know your BMR, never eat less. That is where metabolic damage occurs. Sure, you will certainly lose weight, but the cost to long term health is high. Please don't listen to people who claim success at 1200 unless they have lost and maintained for years. (You won't get many of those). You lose weight by having a caloric deficit, however, you still must feed your body. Calculate your metabolic numbers as accurately as possible, eat at a healthy deficit and exercise some. That works every time. There is quite a bit of quality info on this site, unfortunately, threre is a lot of junk, nonsense and bro-science. Seek out people who advocate healthy weight loss for advice, not those touting pills, fad diets or very low calorie diets. Hope this helps.

You are absolutely doing the right thing. Your body needs enough fuel to rearrange the weight long-term. Plus, a higher calorie count will give you more energy to power through stronger workouts.

I know it's scary (I was scared going from 1200 to 1300 and even MORE scared going to 1400) but you can do this! You'll be amazed at how much better you'll feel.
