To shake or not to shake? Newbie needs advice :)

Hi
I'm back on mfp after some success last year and then a bit of a fail since New Year :ohwell:
I'm doing 30DS each weekday and I also walk for at least two hours every day with my dogs. I've just bought New Rules Of Lifting For Women to step thing up a notch and will probably do that 2-3 times a week (or whatever it advises, the book hasn't arrived yet!) When I finish 30DS I'll probably go back to C25K for cardio and keep up the NROL4W.
I was looking at protein shakes mainly because I thought I would need them when I start lifting. However, a bit of research has made me realise that my protein intake is pretty low - between 22-40g per day when I think it needs to be 60-80?. (I'm veggie so adding chicken to my diet is not an option!) I think if I have a protein shake as a snack once a day (probably mid afternoon, my danger time when I get really hungry) it would make me feel fuller for longer, stop me snacking on crap ( so stay within my cals) and go some way to sort out my protein deficit.
I have at least 30 pounds to lose (40 would be superb) and ideally would like to lose at least 20 by mid July when I go on holiday to Greece. I want to be leaner, stronger and have more stamina. Do you think protein shakes are the way to go or should I just have a glass of milk?! I've been looking at Optimum Nutrition Gold to start. Thanks for any advice.

For my protein needs (200+ grams), I find shakes to be ONE OF THE MOST effective way to get it (especially combined with low-cal, fat-free milk). My dietary macro is 40/20/40 for carbs, fats, and protein.
I know some people can get there other ways, but, meh, I like the shakes. And ON brand is stellar.0 -
Personally I prefer to eat my calories rather than drink then.
What about: hummus, low fat cheese, cottage cheese, skim milk, tofu, beans, lentils, quorn etc?
Of course I'm not lifting weights...
Up to you, I guess.0 -
If you like cheese, that's another option. Or protein bars.0

Hello,
I realized a huge improvement in weight loss and tone after upping my protein intake to a goal of 40% per day. I think it's the single most important part of my diet (and often overlooked by many). A high quality shake mix is key, and I think your choice is fine.
I personally use a serving of Pro7ein Synthesis (153 cal) mixed with 1 cup Almond Milk (30 cal), and usually one banana (115 cal). So the entire shake is about 300 cal, and very very filling - almost decadent. The almond milk really complements the chocolate ...
Good luck,0 -
I find it difficult to reach my protein levels just with food since having bypass surgery so either have a pre-made shake or make my own protein smoothie for breakfast. I buy the Premier protein shakes at Costco which are $28 for 18 shakes. They have 30g of protein and are low in fat, sugar and carbs. They are also very good. ~0
