FitBit Users: How important is tracking stairs to you?

I have the original FitBit. I love the little bugger, but it not having Bluetooth to sync with my phone is starting to be a deal breaker for me. I am on my iPad almost exclusively now, so getting my laptop and syncing is a pain, plus I don't do it daily so I don't get to see my stats. You want to call me lazy? Go ahead, I just have other priorities.

Anyway, I am either going to upgrade to either the newer model like mine or wait till the Flex gets released. The Flex will not track the number of flights of stairs you do.

How important is this to you? I would think you would get more calories walking 15 steps up stairs than 15 steps flat, for example. But, would it be enough to really matter?

Just curious.

Thanks!!

I have the One. It tracks stairs, to me it's important because I then go out of my way to walk more stairs than I normally would.

It never seems to make a big difference in my calories burned according to my fitbit and I've been doing 50-75 flights the last couple of days. I think I will have to look into getting the flex when it's released.

I just like competing with myself to do more stairs. But I've noticed that I'm not nearly as breathless doing two or three flights at a time as I used to be. Seriously, I used to pause outside the staff room door to recover my breath because I didn't want my colleagues to hear me breathing heavily when I entered the room. I've always been lazy about exercise, that's one reason I'm fat, but for some reason I am really enjoying tracking my stairs.

OMG Stardancer7 I still do that! haha! Never let them see you sweat (or almost pass out from taking the stairs! ha!)!

I don't think fitbit gives you more cals burnt for the stairs or if it does its not much, but I do like to be able to count them as its a great cardio workout and I can track my progress. But that said, I don't like the fact it counts hills as flights of stairs, in my opinion, stairs are much harder than hills.

I like the one better not because of stairs, but because it has a timer function so you can see how many calories and distance you've achieved for a specific activity.

If the stair count is like it is with the Ultra, it's just an altimeter which counts 10 feet elevations as stairs. I get most of my stairs from hills/inclines and low pressure systems, not actually flights of stairs. Fitbit doesn't count more calories for stairs than normal walking, afaik.

Replace your old Fitbit with one that uses bluetooth.

I really like the feature of being able to track stairs because as other person posted, it's one more thing for me to compete against myself with.

I like having the display on the One (IIRC the Flex has no display) since I have an older iPhone that the Bluetooth won't sync with and I like to check in on my step count throughout the day. The stairs, however, meh, I could live without--I don't consider it a key metric. Every once in a while it will also go loopy and say I've done something like 35 flights of stairs when I know I haven't.

I think its funny to think I climbed the height of the worlds tallest dinosaur...or today, I climbed the height of the Leaning Tower of Pisa in stairs...

I don't think it makes a calorie difference, like the other replies.

However! If anyone would like to be fitbit pals, send me a msg... I need more fitbit buddies for motivation =)

I have a zip (was a gift from hubby) and to be honest the stair thing would be nice, but it's not that important to me. I still take stairs as often as possible.

I just don't encounter very many stairs anywhere, except one short flight at the gym, so that doesn't matter at all.

It's because it takes air pressure as well.

Not important to me at all...most days I get 4 flights. I am a stay at home mom who doesn't really go any where except the gym and we don't have stairs. I'm not dragging my one year old out to find a flight just to say I did every day, LOL
  • You are totally not alone....I thought that I was the only one who did that...not if we keep up the good work though. :)

^^^^^^^ Totally! I can't tell you how many times I put on my robe and ran up and down the stairs outside our apartment to get the last badge of the day !

I have a One. I love it, but it's whacked out! My guesstimate for a daily average is 4 flights. Problem is, I don't have any at home or at work. And lately, when I've climbed up and down ladders at home on the weekends, it registers nothing!

Edit: To answer your question--it's not important because it isn't accurate for me.
