First week - gained 1 pound

Well, I just closed on my first week of diet and exercise and while I didn't expect to lose it all, I surely didn't expect to gain anything!
Before the diet, I was a salt fiend. I put salt on everything, I mean everything! And margarine too. But I have cut them out completely. I don't even really miss them. I figured that would do wonders but no luck. I have been under calories everyday, under everything actually. I have been getting good exercise too.
I feel like I am doing everything I can do and it's not working. It really makes me want to eat my husband's birthday cake with cream cheese frosting that's in the fridge. I mean, why not? What's the point if it's obviously not working? I'm not going to do that but it's how I feel.
I know you guys are great for support so I just thought I would say this here and hopefully get some good advice from everyone.

A few questions:

When is the best time to weight in?
What are some good exercises (no equipment) for overweight women? Videos?
What am I doing wrong here?

I exercise everyday. I walk the dogs for 45 minutes or longer two or three times daily. Sometimes I do cardio workouts from the Internet. Next week I am going to use the eliptical bike we got from mom and dad in law.

Thanks for any and all adive guys!

  • You are not doing anything wrong. If you are new to exercise then you might of gained some muscle. Its only been one week! Allow yourself a little more time to see results on the scale.

For me I weigh everyday but I only log my weight on wednesdays. I also measure my bust, under the breasts, around my belly button, hips, thighs and calves.

I think I will get a measuring tape and measure myself weekly too. That might help me to see some difference.

I know from both personal experience and loads of anecdotes from others that weight gain or extremely small loss in the first couple of weeks is very, very common. You've suddenly changed what your body is used to with both food and exercise. Give it time, and don't lose heart :)

walking the dogs 45 mins twice a day is AWESOME. keep at it consistently, keep at your calorie goals, drink WATER, eat breakfast and you'll see results in no time. !!!

You should weigh in first thing in the morning (you could do it naked but i do it in my underwear and sports bra) and make sure you use the bathroom first! The best exercise without needing equipment in my opinion is walking, because it's easy on the joints and not too tiring (depending on how fast you walk.) I don't think you're doing anything wrong necessarily, but it could be that you're still eating too many calories? Or the wrong kinds of food. Try drinking at least 8 cups of water per day, and have lots of fruit and veg. :-)

Measuring yourself is a much better motivator than the scale IMO grab yourself a journal and mark the date, weight and measurements. I keep mine with the measuring tape and pen in the bathroom. I really enjoy going back a few weeks and seeing stuff like oh! April 10th my thighs were 27 and now they are 23! Really good to do if you can't see the changes in the mirror.

Also, make sure you're not actually under eating by too much. I know some weeks if I don't eat enough, like last week when I was sick for instance. I didn't eat nearly enough and I gained over a pound. This week when I was feeling better, I took that pound plus another half pound back off!

Well done on the decision to make a change!! I'm a 2 week loser, and by that I mean one week I lose hardly anything (stay the same or put on) and the following week I have a good loss. Just keep going and I'm sure you will see the results! I weigh in the same time every week, Sunday morning, first thing. As for exercise, I walk, just keep moving - you don't need videos or equipment, just move, outside, up and down stairs or on the spot.

You're not doing anything wrong, just give it some time! Just make sure your eating enough, less isn't always better!! Keep it up and I'm sure you'll see some amazing results!

I think that might be it. Monday and Tuesday I was severely under calories because I didn't know what I was doing so I was basically starving myself.

I guess we'll see in another week.

Stay on an even keel. It is great to feel motivated by a good week, but the point is to stick with the program long enough to make it a habit and once you do that, to make it a lifestyle. If I remember correctly, I was up 1 1/2 lbs after one week. It wasn't until week 3 that the lbs started to come off. One week is awesome. Now do another, then another. Good luck!

It took me a few weeks to start losing weight so it may be the same for you. Don't give up that is the key, keep exercising and logging your food.

You will NOT gain muscle - not in a week, and not from walking and eating at a deficit..... Agree with taking measurements rather than weighing - your weight fluctuate constantly due to a million reasons....I "gain" up to 6 lbs once a month - and I will not go nuts about it - it's water weight....

Patience - you did not gain the weight in a week, and you will not lose it in a week....

Quite often your body will retain water when you first start an exercise program. This is normal.

We've got a great group started on facebook to help with accountability on a daily basis. I give advice on both the fitness and weightloss topics. I gained 3lbs in my first 3-4 weeks of Insanity, then it droped. If you have any interest just let me know. Most of us are doing Insanity or P90x workouts but anything you do is ok.

Weighing at any time other than in the morning, after going to the bathroom, with no or minimal clothes on, is not going to give you a true reading.
