It's my first day on,and I'm just looking for some people to relate to. I used to be in fantastic shape, and I trained almost daily in some form or fashion, but that's been a few years ago. What's your style? Are you a stand up fighter, do you grapple, is karate more your thing, or do you just want to absorb all that you can, like me? Give me your thoughts, let's talk about your workout, and please...no fighting over traditional and modern styles. haha

Well the army has us all training to fight in a manner that appears very similar to what you see in the MMA these days. I have long arms so once I got serious in to boxing I actually got really good at. I did decent in kick boxing as well.
I liked boxing where it is completely down to striking but in reality almost all fights have a tendency to become wrestling matches. So when I got in to the MMA type of training I had to learn to make a shift. The first few spar partners I had kept losing to me because they were just fighting me like a boxer or kick boxer would and I was winning from superior experience.
Then I took on a few of the better people who had been watching me and they did not even think about fighting like that. The got in close and grappled me every time. I was never able to beat any of them until I started learning about grappling. I am way out of shape now but even when I was at my best I would say I was middle of the road at best.0 -
I'm just over 5'3",so my reach isn't the greatest, but I've got a surprising amount of power. I trained in Kenpo at a pretty strict school for years and became a black belt, then I took up kickboxing (which I love) and decided I wanted to fight. I had one match, and the girl outweighed me by 165 pounds. Either way, I won to decision and was really excited to continue. I can't find anywhere that does kickboxing matches now!! I had to drive over 200 miles for that one! haha Everyone says, "Just sign up for MMA matches, but don't let them take you to the ground." It's like you said though, get someone who knows what they're doing, and they will take you down. I'm trying to learn some jiu jitsu and judo. I figure: 1. why not? 2. it's good defensive knowledge to have, and 3. I'm starting to think I will never find a place that still arranges kickboxing bouts.0

I most certainly will! Thanks So what kind of kickboxing do you like? Mine's kind of a mix of muay thai and jun fan.0 -
Personally I have a kickboxing background, but now I'm training for police selfdefence and is mostly grappling/throwing/disarming an opponent which used to be weird at first but now it's getting better.0

My style? You can call it the art of fighting without fighting. *runs*0 -
I train in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and just start training MMA again. I am getting back into working out after a layoff due to work and injuries, and I tell you it is tough to get back into the mode. But I will do it.0

Did Muay Thai and MMA training (for conditioning purposes only) when I had more time before my daughter was born, but now I just instruct kickboxing (cardio and also bag/circuit classes) along with kickboxing on my own.

growing up it was just street fighting in LA, however I was a wrestler in HS. I took a few classes in Aikido. Then I joined the military as Reconnaissance or RECON, I received allot of fighting but to kill.0

I did boxing in my early teens, then bjj and mma in my early 20's. I still drop into local spots here and there and catch up with people. A lot of the people that i trained with back in early 2000's have their own school's now. When i stop by, i usually end up going over something that i know would help like mount escapes or how to defend typical tournament tactics. Some of the guy's i competed against in grappling tournaments are fighting in the UFC or were. Crazy. I liked boxing a lot more though. Wish i could pick it back up, but i don't think my body could handle the workload. Cardio has to be pretty legit, and it's tough staying in fighting shape.0

I trained in TKD as a teen, and then wushu up until my son was born (tested for my yellow belt at 8 months pregnant). I went back to class one day and tore my ACL doing jumps--instructor did not warm up knees, and as everyone knows pregnancy makes ligaments soft. It's now repaired, and so I am trying to figure out what to do next.
Oh, my son is 12...so it has been a while since I have formally trained. :happy:0 -

haha nice. Easiest way to remain unharmed is to avoid conflict whenever possible. haha0 -

Ugh it's so tough. I still have pretty good reflexes and power, but my cardio isn't nearly as great. haha Don't give up though!0 -

Taekwondo. All three of my daughters are black belts, so now I'm going for mine. We did it years ago at the rec center, then a few years ago we moved to a tradiitional studio. I had to drop out for a bit due to a messed up back and hip. Still have those issues, but I work around them.0

I have a clothing policy that means I always wear trousers that allow freedom of movement of my legs so, for instance, I never wear jeans. This means that I can kick freely... or run away screaming like a girl. I do a mean *****-slap, though.
As to your question, I practice stuff based on white crane kung fu. I also do weapons and dirty CQC. Luckily, in the UK, we're still allowed many traditional weapons.0 -
Hi I do Wing Chun, and have in the past done a lot of Karate, Judo and Taeqwondo, also a bit of boxing, feel free to add me if you wish, Im always happy to chat training ideas.0
