SUSHI!

Hi guys I was wondering is sushi actually good in a 1800 - 2000 cal a day diet? I thought it was but when I added up the calories on MFP 4 pieces of teriyaki chicken sushi added up to around 600 calories!?

Makis are terrible for you. Certain sashimis are can be good for you.

...but I eat makis anyway, because they are too good to pass up. lol.

It was probably because it was terriyaki chicken. Get kappa (cucumber) maki or salmon maki or salmon nigiri. They are all lower in calories.

I stick to spicy salmon (even though some discourage it because of the spicy mayo) or spicy tuna rolls unless I really set aside the calories and eat light all day. Then I'll get a few special rolls.

Lots of sodium in those little buggers so if you stay within calories but gain weight the next day, you know why.

    I love sushi.

Most people say to go with teh Sashimi.

I adore spicy tuna or spicy salmon rolls though. I of course like the deep fried ones too, I just stay away from them unless its a speial event. I also dont eat sushi unless I am mentally prepared for the sodium bloat either.

Sushi can vary a lot between different restaurants. The teriyaki sauce is loaded with sugar. Try to stick to the fish/veggie rolls with limited sauce.

I love sushi and have it about once a week for lunch! But 600 seems excessive on the calories. I usually have 2 pieces (100g each) and expect around 350-400 cals for teriyaki chicken.

Personally I only choose entries on MFP where there is a weight associated with it - perhaps investigate that a bit more, don't select anything with a portion size that doesn't give you a weight measurement so you can be accurate.

    That's my 2 cents worth :)

I assumed sushi was somewhat ok to eat on a diet since the kind i get is one roll/6 pcs, with tuna, and salmon and rice mixture of sorts but when i asked the waitress about calories she said she had no idea and they dont have it posted on their website :/ so basically i hardly ever get sushi since i cant plug it into my MFP

You may have logged four entire rolls instead of four pieces.

I love sushi! But they put so much sugar and salt in the rice so I like to make my own at home using brown rice.

If you are talking about nori rolls - a roll of rice with a bit of filling - then are are pretty high in calories, because of the rice. I would rather eat a couple of eggs for 140 cals than a nori roll for about the same.

I never knew how many calories were in white rice before I joined MFP.

    mmmmmm sushi!

    Love it.

In the UK we have a chain called Yo Sushi, who publish nutritional guidelines for their whole menu.
If you look on their website, or Google 'Yo Sushi nutrition' you can download a pdf file and take it with you when you eat out - won't be exact of course, but will give you an idea.

I eat sushi once a week at least as I love it, I get ready made from a supermarket mostly and it's usually 350-400 cals per pack it maybe not as nice as restaurant sushi but I like it and it does nt do me any harm.

Unless you're eating sushi every day, I don't think you should worry too much about it. If it's a frequent thing, I'd avoid maki, especially those with cream cheese, tempura, and mayonnaise. Feel free to fill up on sashimi, though, especially octopus!

So don't eat the chicken one. I have the Tuna & avocado with chilli sauce in it & it's 140 cals for 4 rolls.

Sushi is VERY good. The whole time I've been here I've eaten sushi about 4 times a week...... I've lost weight easy.

Sushi actually refers to the rice it's served with, it doesn't mean a thing served raw.

I love sushi!! The restaurant chain I go to when I can is Yo Sushi! Their menus have the calorie content next to the items, so you can plan ahead, or work it out as you go along.

To go back to your query, if you can include your sushi in your daily calorie allowance, where's the problem?

It's the vegetarian sushi that gets me the most......but like someone said, its actually the rice/method that makes sushi...shushi!

Talking of rice....it is the white rice that prevents it from being uber healthy...sometimes I manage to find brown rice sushi, but that is so hard to come by!

If you live in the UK and go to YO! Sushi, like I do you can look up all the nutrition.

It's probably close in calories to other sushi as well, so I'd use it as a guide if you don't have the nutritional info. for another sushi place. I just stick to about 3 nigiri/maki/iso plates and it's 300-450 calories. If I want something fried I go with the pumpkin because it's so good!

sushi is my favorite thing to eat! There are so many varieties, and for 6 pieces you usually eat between 150-200 cals, depending on the type and how it is made. Just make sure you go to reputable places.

I've been a sushi addict for well over 20 years, and would eat it literally every day.....if I could afford to do so. I have to scratch my head a bit at the folks who are making sushi sound like a high-calorie meal. The small amount of rice (less than a cup) used in most maki rolls will amount to just over 200 calories (ish), with the remaining filler only a fraction more. The key to that total is stick with AUTHENTIC Japanese inspired sushi......basic maki rolls/negiri/sashimi.....and steer well clear of the American-ized concoctions (which are heavy on cheese, mayo, fried components, and other nasty stuff). Unfortunately, the latter tend to be the more popular here in the States, but 1) would give a Japanese sushi chef a heartattack to even think about, and 2) are the basis for MOST of the calories. Now, one would expect a high sodium intake as a result of excessive shoyu (soy sauce) but, again, that's a personal thing and can certainly be mitigated.

The bottom line is that sushi is one of the most inherently healthy foods, IF 1) you stick to the basics and 2) you eat it in moderation.

    Makis are terrible for you.

Since when? I know it's often just plain white rice, but still, I wouldn't call that 'terrible'.

I have no idea what teriyaki chicken maki is though. I usually stick to the salmon/avocado maki (a roll is like 350 calories) or salmon sashimi. But yes it can easily pile up on calories if you're not careful.
