herniated disc and lifting weights

This has probably been asked before so I apologize in advance!

In November I found out I have a herniated disc on my L5(lower back). I was doing really awesome with lifting weights and i know thats key to losing weight. Since then I haven't even picked up a weight in fear of having to have another surgery added to my list. I've lost a few more pounds and noticed the pain in my back has quit hurting. I want to start lifting again BUT I'm afraid of repeating what I did before. Does anyone have some good weight training excerises I can do to start lifting again without hurting my back or something that helps with back pain?

ETA: I also had surgery on my right knee back in 05 since I would dislocate it every month or so. I only have a ROM in both knees less than 90 degree angle so squats are next to impossible for me to do.

Try less weight, so not to strain, but more reps, so as to tone.

Ok! I will have to try that. Start off back at 5 pound weights. Would you recommend free weights or machines?
