Coaches are on administrative leave after making students do bear crawls for missing track practice. Parents submitted photos (in article) of blistered hands that were black from the track.
Thoughts?

If a punishment causes physical injury I think it is going to far. In this example bear crawl on the track I don't think is right. However, move to the center and go back and forth a few times would be a different story.
If you missed some physical conditioning on a sports team you may as well make it up. If you missed a classroom excersice because you were gone you would be expected to make up the work. IMHO there isn't anything wrong with a little extra physical excersice..
Now as far as ramifications to the coaches in this particular case I would withhold judgement since I don't have all of the facts..0 -
I am torn. The photo's look bad but the black stuff is really nothing. That stuff can easily get on clothes, skin and shoes. Then again, I feel like kids in sports getting blisters is probably not that uncommon.
It this a bigger issue because it was a punishment for missing practice?0 -
I don't think it's fair to punish them for attending another mandatory event at school. I'd like to know how long they had to do these bear crawls.0

Simple answer....the school did right. Most tracks have a grass infield...While I agree with the respect for the team, to impose a penalty which causes blisters is going too far. Had it been running, and they got blisters from that, who cares. Bear Crawls are fine...but why to the point of blisters and why on the track and not on the infield?0

Having been both a student athlete and a coach of track and field. this punishment went to far!!!! many of the students had other responsibilities or appt. to attend...how dare a coach make them bear crawl on a black all weather track!!!!! if the coaches knew many were going to be out then they can't really "punish" per say. when I was a student athlete, and I had a family obligation or a dr. appt i made my coaches aware the day before or earlier. oh the flip side as a coach, the only time I ever "punished" my athletes is when they didn't show up(and didn't have a valid excuse as to why they didn't) or were 10 or more minutes late....and even then i made them RUN 1 or 2 extra laps or extra sprints at the end of practice. the school and school district(? were they mentioned?) did right by putting them on administrative leave.0
