I know the scale is the devil...but.....

So...I have read as many of these forum posts as I could find on the subject of "what works to lose weight, and why I am not losing any". I have seen a lot about TDEE and BMR, and I have come to think I am not eating enough. I am new to MFP and while not new to "diets" I am new to eating better whole foods and less processed, refined crap I can pronounce. MFP gave me a daily goal of 1200 calories. My TDEE - 20% at 5'9" and 212lbs is 1648. I walk daily between 40-60 minutes. I have just now started some work with weights (I have no clue what I am doing). I lost 13 pounds in about two weeks at the start, but have stalled out completely. I am not asking why, so please, don't get snarky...I think I know why, but I just want some confirmation, as we are blasted from childhood that to lose weight we must eat less.

Here, though, is the clincher. I HAVE to lose the last 13 pounds, preferably 20 pounds, in order to be put on the waiting list for a double lung trans plant that I need to save my life. So, while the scale is the devil, and I understand that....it is a devil that I must submit to. To the transplant team, weight and health is just a number, not an actual state of fitness.

Please look at my diary, which is public and make any suggestions you think are appropriate....just please, realize I am trying everything I can and have enough to deal with without nastiness and judgement. Thanks!!!

Many people lose a LOT at the beginning of their diet. Then it slows down, they get bored and frustrated and go back to the bad habits. I am struggling with the last 20 or so pounds and know it will take a long time!

Your food choices look pretty good to me. You could try increasing the exercise a bit if you are able, but so bear in mind that the scales might not move for a few weeks as you start to build muscle (muscle inflammation, extra water and glycogen while the muscles repair).

Be prepared for it to take quite a few months ... only one pound a week so losing the last 20 pounds should take around 5 months!! :(

I am trying slowly to increase my exercise, I went from being able to walk maybe 15-20 minutes a couple times a week to 40-60 every day. which has been great. Maybe I just have a lot working against me as I am on steroids and a lot of other meds. I will keep working to increase my exercise as much as I can before it gets dangerous. Thanks! I am hoping it doesn't take 5 months, and I have to do this the right way because I will have to continue to lose, or at lease maintain or they will kick me off the waiting list when I DO make it on.

It's funny how now one wants to reply to these posts asking for help, when I see 30+ replies to other posts....strange...

I don't really have any advice as I'm just starting here, but wanted to say good luck and try not to get discouraged! Keep exercising and eating well. Maybe you hit a temp plateau as you increase muscle mass, since muscle weighs more, but soon your metabolism should kick in since muscle burns more calories. Since you mention that your on some medications maybe increase your water intake.

Again, good luck and keep at it!

I looked at your food diary and it looks great! Like you mentioned, I think its time to up the food intake. I use this TDEE calculator, there are plenty more you can search and they vary a few hundered cals but you can get a rough guess of how much to eat.

Keep in mind the weight can come off very quickly at first and then it does feel like you are stalling out, when in reality you are still probably losing but at a slower pace.

I suggest loading up on the veggies to help increase your food intake. I eat a bag of the steam fresh veggies a day. Also if you like cottage cheese that is a healthy snack etc.

A food scale has become my best friend. I honestly never knew how much anything weighed and always guessed and it really helps. I got mine at the local grocery store for $10. It's digital and I can change it from g, oz, or lbs.

Overall I wouldnt up the amount you are exercising, but if you can the inensity if that makes sense. I don't want to suggest anything that could harm your health, but maybe try C25K its an interval walk/jog program it has really helped me! Also are you eating back your exercise calories? I would make sure to eat back at minimum half, and get those workout calories in within an hour after you finish your workouts, your muscles are able to absorb all that energy make them stronger and you stronger without storing a lot of it.

Like you I have been on steroids on and off for asthma and they always make me feel bloated and basically like a whale. More water definatly helps this, and a basic rule of thumb is take your weight, divide it in half and that is how many ounces of water you need minimum. EX. I weigh 160lbs, so I need 80 oz of water / day minium (about 10 cups).

I am pretty sure my diary is open and I eat about 1600-1800 a day so feel free to add me as a friend and look at (look at not this week lol its been and off week and I have had pizza or pasta....and a lot of junk food). Sorry that was a novella lol but if you have any questions or if I didnt make sense on something then please feel free to PM me, I would love to finish talking to you about it all. I have done my fair share of crash diets and finally dropped 35lbs in the past 9 months and keeping it off!

    Best of luck!

You didn't say how fast you need to lose the weight. So, I am guessing the faster the better. Normally I wouldn't advise a person that has only 13-20 lbs to even try to lose weight fast. It just sets you up for unhealthy eating habits and for so many just goes right back on. I think that 1600-1800 is a good calorie goal. I am guessing that would let you lose about a pound and a half a week. If you had longer I would say up the calories a bit to lose a half a pound a week. Because for most people it really is ok to take 2 or 3 months to lose 13-20 lbs. I also think the amount of exercise you do is a very good level too if you weren't in a bind for time. Maybe 60 minutes a day could be your minimum for now, once you get to goal you could drop it down to a 40 minute minimum and do maintenance calories.

Also for you I don't think your scale is the devil. I think could be a life saving tool. You will have to keep a vigilant eye on your weight since a couple pounds can knock you off the waiting list.

PS I don't want you to die either and I don't even know you.

1600-1700 sounds about right for weight loss. I looked at your diary, and it seems you like to measure food in volume rather than weight, things like cups or 3 tomatoes to as opposed to grams. When you measure volume, or the number of an amount of food, it can be way off. As a quick example, I have a granola cereal that says for 2/3 cup, it's 200 calories. It also says for 55g, it's 200 calories. That 55g is actually close to 1/3-1/2 cup. So, if I ate 2/3 cup, I'd be eating an extra 100-200 more just in one small meal. Add that up for an entire day of meals, and that could an amazingly high number.

Pick a starting calorie amount, 1600 or 1700, not a range, or whatever you want to start at, and start weighing food. After 2 weeks (normally would advise more time, but you should still get a good idea by 1-2 weeks after a diet change), reevaluate. Not losing weight fast enough? Restrict more or add more exercise. Losing too fast? Eat more. Losing just right but starving too much? Change up your macros. Higher protein and fat may be more filling, but you have to find what works for you personally.

Good luck on your journey! I hope everything goes well.

I hate my scale but it is a necessary tool so I can calculate my composition numbers. That's ALL I use it for.

I've learn the hard way that losing fat will take time. I've committed myself to the fact that I need to change my lifestyle not 'go on a diet'. Since it's a lifestyle change i have also come to grips with the fact that it will never truly end. I have to make it a part of my daily life. So far it's working. The scale may say I'm not losing 'weight' but my clothes, the mirror, my peers all tell me otherwise.
