I was looking online last night for dieticians/nutritionists in my local area when I stumbled on a website about vibration training machines which said that they could be beneficial for people with arthritis, MS and other similar conditions including.......fibromyalgia!!!
I figured I had nothing to loose and phoned them today. The lady I spoke to was lovely, really helpful and knowledgeable and so understanding of my conditions. She booked me in to go and see her this afternoon and I had a few minutes on the vibration machine that was set to just give a gentle massage to get me used to how it works and feels and to see how my body reacts to it.
I was impressed to say the least - after only a few minutes I was able to stand up ON MY OWN (usually my OH has to physically help get me out of a chair, etc..) and I walked from the bus stop to our apartment with only minimal support needed and only had to lean very slightly on my stick!!
So, obviously that's made me a little bit happy!
She also talked to me about my general diet and nutrition....This was where I got even happier.
I told her that my Dr had put me on Orlistat (along with everything else I'm taking, lol) and told her that he's got me on a very low fat, low-ish carb diet of under 1,000 calories per day.
She went a little nutso and worked out that the amount of calories that I need simply to keep me functioning properly is close to 3,000; so to have my Dr tell me under 1,000 is insane.
She's told me to up my calories to a higher amount (although I flinched at nearly 3,000 she isn't suggesting I HAVE to eat that amount; it's just what my body needs daily to keep going so to speak) and also to get a good amount of carbs and the "healthy" fats to balance the protein, fruits and veggies (which she said I was going great with, so yay me!) and that the best thing for me to do is follow a low GI plan to help keep my blood sugars as level as possible.
She's recommended a couple of books to read; which I'm getting from the library on Monday and hopefully within the next week or so I can finally start building a better eating plan and start having the vibration machine training twice a week to help me become more mobilsed (after that, she starts me with light strength training to help get me a bit stronger!)
I'm seriously so happy right now and just wanted to share it a bit

Sounds great
3000 seems like a lot, but 1000 is way too low!

Yeah my jaw hit the floor when she said 3,000!
But she did also say she's not suggesting I do eat that amount; but that I should definitely eat more than under 1,000.
She's also told me that the Orlistat will really mess with my fibro so on her advise I'm not taking it - having looked at the leaflet that came with it and looking at my diet in general (after having gone over it with her today as well), I realised I actually don't take in enough fat for it to work anyway.0 -
Awesome - so great when we have people placed in our lives who can help us. Sounds like a wonderful connection that you have made. God bless.0

I've done that vibration training and it really does work well for muscle toning etc.0

Thank you BOGmama!
I'm just so pleased I've found someone that understands and is willing to try and help, you know?
It's a relief and you're right - it's a great connection; god bless you, too :flowerforyou:
@canroadrunner - ooh, it's good to hear from someone that's done it!
I know it would be different for me as she's approaching it slower than she would someone who doesn't have the health issues I do; but how long did it take for you to notice a difference?0 -

Does she have any sort of medical degree? You should really talk to your doctor before you stop taking a medicine based on the advise of a salesman. Tell your doc how you're feeling, that you think 1000 cals is too low and you're worried about the complications of the medicine, and see what he says. He may be a jerk and not explain anything. Then you need a new doctor. Or he may say, "yes but those complications are out weighted by this, this, and this." You can also ask if there are other meds you could be taking that don't have those complications but still do the job he's trying to do.
As for the 1000 calories, more than a few doctors "prescribe" this type of diet for people that have a lot to loose for a short time. It kick starts the loosing and lets you take weight off your joints faster with little to no side effects in people with more than 100 lbs to loose.
Bottom line, talk to your doctor. Tell him what you're considering and see what he thinks.
Good luck.0 -
She's a nutritionist and a personal trainer...Not sure why you said salesman considering she hasn't tried to sell me anything and gave me the session I had today for free...But I digress.
My Dr, on the other hand is an idiot and despite knowing that my fat intake isn't the issue, it's my appetite and I need help with working on an eating plan that will curb said appetite put me on Orlistat anyway.
I've told him that sticking to what he's told me (low-fat, minimal carbs and UNDER 1,000 calories per day) is making my CFS flare up badly, making me very dizzy and shaky to the point where I've passed out and he's still telling me to do it.
He's also put me on Orlistat before and I gained weight - a stone...My Dr knew this and still put me on it again. I've not started taking it yet because I only collected it yesterday evening; so I'm not going to have any kind of effect from stopping it suddenly.
I did ask about other meds and he's said flat out "no"...But like I said, he's a jerk that doesn't listen - to him I'm nothing more than a big fat (pun intended) statistic.
Regarding a new Dr, none of the Dr's in the office I'm registered at will take me on because I've been with the same Dr from the start of him trying to find out what was wrong with me and when I tried to switch (I figured out that my Dr is just more than a little clueless about a lot of things), I was told I couldn't, that I had to stay with who I'm registered with because I'm what's considered a "long term patient".
I would register with an entirely different office; but there aren't any others in my area.0
