Flexibility for stiff people

Hey everyone.

I'm not sure if there is a post about this on here or not, but regardless I wanted to get some feedback.

I've made a 6-12 month commitment to try and get the front and side splits by this time next year. I am naturally stiff muscled and it is frustrating at times watching some of the other students in my martial arts class put their face on the floor when stretching and I'm barely able to touch my toes.

To all of you in martial arts, dance, gymnastics, and other sports requiring a degree of flexibility do you have any daily stretches or routines that you would recommend? I'm considering finding some stretches I can do while watching TV (which isn't much) and after cardio I plan on doing some aswell.

Thanks for any tips beforehand.

I can't do a full squat until I have like 300 lbs loaded. Bumping this thread for actual help.

Well this power yoga routine is pretty good. It is fast paced, and will keep you interested. It will improve your flexibility if you keep at it.

Look into Yoga or Pilates! I have degenerate disk disease so I have to be very careful with my movement and stretch really good. I easily pull out my back and it literally makes me unmovable for weeks at a time ( and I am not even 25 yet!) I find that when I am consistent with Y and P I feel great and am much more fluid! Hope this helps!

I'll give this a go and see how it goes thanks!

Thanks for the tips everyone. I generally have used traditional stretches over the years and just have not gotten much results. I can still kick face high, but I need to stretch out quite a bit before I am at full capacity.
