Does anyone else not cook their oats?

I like my oatmeal dry.

You just eat it plain? I figured it would stick to the tops of your mouth and generally be hard to chew. Anyways, I just cook mine for like 1 minute in some water and then mash a banana on top and it's good to go. If not that, then I mash peanut butter in it.

One of my son in laws was eating dry oats. Didn't seem very appetizing to me. He said something about it making you feel fuller to help control overeating.

I was eating dry oatmeal with some nuts and other stuff. It's really good, but my dad throw a giant fit when he found out. I'm 55 and was probably 45 when I got on that kick. Years ago, when Dad was a kid, one of their neighbor kids died because he ate a large amount of dry oatmeal. It expanded in his stomach.

So, yeah. It's good and I do like it. Just be really careful not to eat too much of it.

I've been doing some of the overnight oatmeal recipes--while they're not cooked, it does soak overnight in milk or yogurt or whatever and soften up. Can't say I've been eating them dry.

The expanding in your stomach story kind of reminds me of the death by Pop Rocks and cola stories I used to hear as a kid.

I've been known to grab a small handful of old-fashioned oats when "I HAVE TO HAVE SOMETHING RIGHT NOW!" - it's a good filler when you need a quick snack, but not "so good" that you're tempted to keep getting more. I usually add hot water from the coffee machine at work to my oatmeal and let that "cook" for 5 minutes or so - still has some texture, but also a sauce like substrate.

Nobody's mentioned Muesli? Made primarily with uncooked oatmeal.

    INGREDIENTS:
    4 1/2 cups rolled oats
    1/2 cup toasted wheat germ
    1/2 cup wheat bran
    1/2 cup oat bran
    1 cup raisins
    1/2 cup chopped walnuts
    1/4 cup packed brown sugar
    1/4 cup raw sunflower seeds

    DIRECTIONS:
    1. In a large mixing bowl combine oats, wheat germ, wheat bran, oat bran, dried fruit, nuts, sugar, and seeds. Mix well. Store muesli in an airtight container. It keeps for 2 months at room temperature.

    That was my immediate reaction.

My son has them raw in breakfast smoothies with banana and milk as he can't stand the texture when cooked.

I consume oats both ways, I'm an equal opportunity digester.

I sometimes eat them raw and dry with yoghurt. It's not that different to eating muesli.

It depens on the oats, though. Basic porridge oats (rolled oats) are fine. Pinhead oatmeal feels a bit too "raw" to me. And obviously I think whole oats would do, but I never see or use whole oats.

When I'm too lazy to cook the darn things, I'll just throw them in the blender with almond milk and some fruit.

I do not use those kinds of oats that needs cooking. I am usign plain old oats, which only needs to be added to milk and enjoyed. If I want them more moist, I just pop them in a jar with milk over the night. Maybe adding some dried goji or cranberries.

My husband likes to eat dry oatmeal, but he mixes in peanut butter, coconut, raisins, and any kind of nuts we have on hand in the pantry, kind of like an uncooked granola.

I like flaked oatmeal raw with a bit of milk and cinnamon. If it is tougher rolled oats, like my Red Mills rolled grain mix, I always undercook them so they are chewy. Mushy oatmeal doesn't appeal to me

woah, I could never. The only time I've heard of this is bodybuilding -- when they try and bulk. It doesnt fill the stomach as cooked so they can eat more. To each their own though, I have a ton of weird food habits/likes.

When I'm nauseated (or pregnant....same thing!), I like to nibble on dry rolled oats as they really soothe my stomach. I will usually nibble a few while making oatmeal, but I don't tend to eat them raw. Just soaked in milk overnight (with various accompaniments, of course) is divine, though!

I used to put some in my orange juice and have it as like a cold oatmeal cereal with juice lol I add it to smoothies to give more fiber and it makes them a bit thicker which I like. I try to have oatmeal wiht freshly squeezed oranges (which I barely have time for) if I want to feel more sugar conscious or I just add the 1/2- 1 cup of orange juice depending if I want more liquid or thick my "cereal" :)
