Switching up weights

Hello all
So I used 5lb weights to help me lose 66 pounds and then I stopped. I am back now and have started using 5lb weights again and have been at it for a week about. I bought myself 10lb weights but I don't want to strain my muscles, when would be a good time to switch them? I tried to see if I could lift them and I could do about 5 reps before my arm was really tired.

If you can do 5 reps with them, stick with them...you'll get better and better and that 5 will turn into 6,7,8,9,10 etc..

If you follow a lifting routine, you should be upping your weight as you hit your rep max anyways.

What exercises are you doing with them? You should really focus on compound exercises, as you invoke more muscle groups.

if you've started lifting with 5lbs for only a week, give it another week or so before increasing your reps. what is your max # reps per set? if you easily hit your max reps, up your weight but go to 8lbs instead of 10. it's better to go slowly then a big jump. once you have a solid foundation of strength, you can jump weights like that (ie. going up 10lbs at once) but right now, i would ease into it and target to hit your max# reps consistently for about a week before increasing weight
